I couldn't realy find an appropriate forum so i'll post it here. I'm trying to convert mkv 2 avi using avi mux. i set the output to avi but when i have to choose were to save the output file i can only save as mkv. what's wrong why is it so stubborn?
If there's a better forum i'm sure the mods will move it

You should post in New A/V Formats (containers). Use VDubMod for converting to avi.

I've tried that, but for some reason it won't take the audio with it. When i select save as avi, the output file has no audio. i used direct srteam copy.

When you load the file in VDubMod click Streams-Stream list and look for the audio file - maybe for some reason it is disabled.

I am sure I miss something, but currently I am using a Mac and can not look at the Vdubmod. Hmm, if I remember correctly when the window pop with save as menues there should be also some options for audio. Look at it and select also Direct stream copy for audio

yup done that too. i'm getting a bit annoyed here. Any other ways to get mkv to avi? or to mpg, but tmpg encoder won't eat it anymore, even though it did it before (not really sure about that anymore).

K, I help You!
Start VirtualDubMod (VDM).
Load Your MKV-file.
Go to 'Streams\Streamlist'
Mark the Audiofile and click on 'Demux'.
Go to 'Video\Direct Stream Copy'
Go to 'File\Save As...'
Choose the AVI Container and hit Save.
So You have a AVI without a Audio and the audiofile.
If you want the Audio into the container reopen VDM (if You closed it...)
Open the AVI.
Go to 'Streams\Streamlist'
Click on 'Add'.
Choose the Audiofile.
Click 'Ok'.
Save again the AVI using 'File\Save As...' or press 'F4'.
Say thx and visit my page if You want.

Muxing from MKV to AVI is mainly based on hope, which is why AVI-Mux GUI does not yet support it.

Well shit, I would thank you if it worked ;) , but I added the audio (ogg) then save as... and then... no sound.
I again chose direct stream copy, should i've chosen something else? Full processing takes ages and the file becomes huge, and the toher options give some kind of error.

Don't say you tried to add ogg/vorbis sound to an AVI file.

hey!
If you would read the error VDM would say you that it can't mux ogg/vorbis into an avi-file. You can encode your audio-file as mp3 (right mouse-button and then compression) and then you can mux it into your avi...
greetings,
scrat

Explain to me something :
Why can you play AVIs on your fathers 'home office PC', but no MKVs ? Why dont you just leave the files as they are ?

I can't be using my dad's pc all the time, but if i can get the files to avi, i can use tmpg encoder to turn them into mpg and burn them as VCD. Wich i can watch on my own stand alone dvd player.
Now i managed to get the avi file (no sound) into tmpg by frameserving via virtualdub mod (thanks 2 u christian), with subs, and then i selected the ogg soundtrack saperately in tmpg. now the sound is off-sync and i believe that the speed is different too so if i use tmpg's menu's to sync the sound, it will slowly start to unsync again. thus i thought it would be ez to have the sound and video in one avi file.

OK, the next trial::D
1. Start VDubmod, load the mkv
2. Streams - stream list
3. Right-click onto audio file, select Full processing
4. Click Save wav
5. Wait
At the end you will have uncompressed wav audio file.
Next:
1. Start TMPG
2. Load as video source the avi (without sound) from the previous posts ;)
3. Load as audio source the wav file
4. Select VCD template
5. Click Start.
6. Wait (much longer than in first procedure:D )
Note: It is better to load the VCD template depending of frame rate of mkv. For further details look the guides.

When you open TMPG in the right bottom corner of the application screen you have three buttons - Seting, Load, Save. When you click on Load you are directed to a window with diferent DVD, SVCD and VCD templates for PAL or NTSC. If your mkv is 23.976 fps you should select VCD (NTSCFilm) template. If mkv is 25 fps you should select VCD (PAL) template, if mkv is 29.976 fps - VCD(NTSC) template.
