Tonight I was messing about trying to capture various stuff off Sky digital since it's pretty good quality (picture-wise, not programme-wise ;)) and I noticed that despite being able to watch the 'box office' (rent-a-film for the day feature), I can't capture from it. I understand the reasoning behind this, and can't say I'm surprised, however it reminded me of a quaestion I've been turning over in my mind for a while;

How is it that Box Office can be viewed perfectly well but not recorded onto VHS (or captured)? It seems to me that the capturing/recording end would have to be screwing the copy up voluntarily by order of the signal in question. How does it work?

As you probably already know it's to do with Macrovision (http://www.macrovision.com/) copy protection.

The Macrovision signal/pulse is broadcast in one of the picture lines and is designed to confuse the sync pulse in various video reception equipment.

Actually I wasn't aware of that, thanks a lot! I find it pretty weird so I guess I'll read up on it.
