Hi all,

All is wrote in the title. I would like to modify IFO files to make the DVD plays the French menus by default instead the English ones. Can someone explain me how please ? Thx.

very easy way:

dvdfab!
change the default language,subs and more...

download the free version in
http://www.doom9.org
click on "downloads" on the left...see the guides link to use dvdfab.

another simple but great guide in mrbass page:
http://www.mrbass.org/

I see nowhere where you can make a default language in DVDFab. I know there is the option in DVD Shrink, i'll try it with it.

from mrbass guide(with pictures) :
"You can choose the default stream with the right mouse button Once you right-click it'll turn red indicating it's the default stream. This starts playing "choosed" audio without having to switch to it with your remote when you play the movie.

http://www.mrbass.org/dvdfab/

in dvdshrink you can choose one or all audios streams
but can't choose the order!

in dvdfab you can choose one,all and the order of the audio streams and subs!

Yes that's cool but i'm talking about the menus languages. Example, it's wrote "Play Movie" in English menu but I would like it shows "Lancer le film" as it is in the French menu. No matter the language of the movie. I would like to do it using IfoEdit if someone knows how to do it.

Also, the default language choice in DVDFab is for movie only , I'm making movies with menus.

now i see:
"...I would like it shows "Lancer le film" as it is in the French menu."

oh sorry,... i misunderstood you.

:o

i don't have any dvd with 2 languages in menu to test
but try to open the video_ts.ifo in ifoedit and take a look in the

"vmg overview"---> "video manager menu attributes"

maybe you have the option to change the default menu !

:)

If the DVD was authored correctly (that is the French menues are in a language unit with 'fr' as the language) all you need do is set the player's preferred language to French, and it will choose the French menu system. There is no way to switch menu languages.
The player chooses the language in this order
1) an exact match on the preferred language and a language unit
2) the "unspecified" language unit
3) the first language unit

But when I put off the French menus then it works. So I assume WinDVD is maybe set to English by default but why can't it play the French ones when the English ones are no more ? This is my problem.

I'm not familiar with how DVDStripper removes things, but I'm guessing it did not remove the language unit entirely.
Open VIDEO_TS.IFO with IfoEdit and scroll down the bottom pane of the initial display to see the language units. Are both English and French there after removing either one? If so, that's the problem, and the one that was "removed" is now a broken language unit.

@djan

Does your DVD in question have a menu selection for you to display whatever menu you want?

No, but when I play it on my standalone, it shows the French Menu and when I play it on WinDVD, it shows the English Menu. I want it shows the French menu by default on the two as I would like to remove the English one that's something like more than 500 MB. The problem when i remove it, it doesn't play anymore on WinDVD. So it'll hang on all English default units (programs and standalones).

When I remove the English menus, there is always the English Language Unit in the IFO file, this is not normal. It has to be removed, but how ? :confused:

I wish I could help you out but first I need to find a region 1 DVD that is similar to yours. I was working on one a couple of weeks ago but don't remember it. :(

Try to strip English LU using the guide that you can find here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72313). Please consider only steps from 3 to 9.

@djan

I decided to post your guide here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=72547). I didn't burn it to test it if I had my English set up on my standalone as my preferred language so let me know it works. It plays fine on my PC though.

@mpucoder

Once again, I resorted to using IfoEdit's HexEditing feature to set the default. ;)

YO 2COOL (:respect: :cool: )

I copied all the LU data from LU 1 into LU 2 a few days ago for djan as I offered to help him but I was surprised when he told me it didn't work doing this exact same thing

do you think is it because I left the LU's value at 2 and is this why you change it to 1?

I didn't think it would affect the DVD leaving it at 2 as it would be pointing to data in the PGC's for the French Menu's anuway

yesterday I sent him another IFO as I also modified the PGC's so that it played the French Menu's in either Menu. I guess if it doesn't work then changing the value to 1 just might

what made it harder was that I couldn't test anything myself as I don't have any multi language DVD's but now you have give me the missing piece ;)

MackemX, It's been awhile...

Another method I was looking into was swapping IDs.

Late note: I fear there maybe more copying and pasting in hexedit module. Not a big problem though. Unfortunately, I have somewhere to go soon so I'll look into it later.

this IFO has 2 LU's with 9 PGC's in each

I copied the LU2 data into LU 1 as you say in your guide but I also copied the 9 PGC's from LU 2 into LU 1

basically I had 2 LU's which were identical and all pointing to the French Menu's so I presumed it would work. I don't think I modded the VIDEO_TS IFO the 2nd time though

it will be simple to do but doing it without a DVD to test it on is harder I guess as I can't go into fine detail testing. I look forward to your feedback as I'm just shooting in the dark here whereas you can test it all instantly :)

have fun where ever your going ;)

p.s. I used 2 windows in Hex Editor for my copy and pastes

Just had to satisfy my curiousity and burnt my DVD after using the guide. My standalone is always set to English and guess what? My French menus played! Yayyyy!
