Dear Sirs,

in your opinion, how much processor power does one need in order to decode 720x576 -video encoded with H.264?

My question relates to decoding of HD-picture encoded with H.264, but as I anticipate the answer to the above-mentioned question be that a powerful computer is already needed for the decoding of SDTV, HD-picture, e.g. decoding 720P video encoded with H.264 is then not at all a thinkable option today in regard of the computer power needed.

Thank you for any info,

Teko77

As far as i know h.264 requires about 2-3x computation power compared to mpeg4 for decoding, so a 2GHz CPU would do it with a decent decoder. Perhaps moonlight decoder is the fastest, i'm not sure.

I guess it depends very much on the tools and options used by the stream. For example, CABAC is going work the decoder harder than CAVLC.

p4 3Ghz will be ok i hope...
especially for encoding at more than 2fps ;-)

My 2000+ can decode it with Moonlight H264 decoder.
