hi. i've tried transcoding, stripping and splitting but never re-encoded a backup. I've read the guide on the Doom9 page and it looks start forward. Just want to know is there any tips on settings, number for passes, procedure or any other tweak that i should look for? I know how frustrating it is to spend hours encoding something and in the end it not what you expected. some info on my backup
NTSC,16:9,pan-scan,one ac3-6ch one dts-6ch and two ac3-2ch, 3 subs and 3 menu languages.
thanks

make sure that you check out the easier IFOUpdate step by Eyes`Only on the sticky in this part of the forum. I fumbled around for about a month and a half trying to figure out that step, but once I read that it worked instantly. Since your source is NTSC, I'd check "Frames Diagnosis" in DIF4U's other options too. Once you do it this way you'll never go back!

Oh ... sweetness, sweetness, I was only joking
When I said by rights you should be
Bludgeoned in your bed
And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her Walkman started to melt
Oh ... i hope you are a smiths fan or you're going to think i am deranged :D
sorry 'bout that - as soon as i read your nick, 'bigmouth strikes again' started playing in my head.
okay back to the encoding question.
disclaimer: encoding is one thing that everyone will have an opinion on. the only real way to know is to try then decide for yourself.
saying that though:
well yes, there are many tweaks and filters you can apply but for the majority of DVD sources, they will not be needed.
DIF4U will automatically determine your bitrate for you, and (as angelus has mentioned) if you check 'autodetect NTSC' in the main window, and 'frame diagnosis' in the 'other options' settings, it will also analyse your source material and select the settings that will produce excellent quality. of course you are free to change any settings you want but i would highly recommend using the settings that DIF4U suggests, as a LOT of time/effort went into the testing of these settings.
if you would like to know more about frame diagnosis/settings try the Knowledge Base at the authors (Eyes`Only) web site.
also if you are using DoCCE4U, make sure you have the 'invert filename' settings also selected in the other options window.
you can read a lot more about encoding in specific guides @ doom9 (go to the document overview page) and also in the cce and avisynth usage forums.
as for passes - its a personal choice - i usually do not exceed 5 passes for main/extras.
hope that helps
