Im looking for something to capture my vhs videos so I can turn them into dvds. I have usb 2.0 ports so I thought a usb adapter would work nice for me. I need one that can capture up to 720 and is around 50-60 dollars. Maybe they dont go that high but it would be nice. Any info on this would be great. And please tell me what you think of using usb vs a card. Thanks Rick

Whats "720" relate to?

I had a USB 1.0 unit a few years ago that was rubbish, but a mate has a little USB 2.0 one that he uses on his laptop, swears by it. Apparently the USB 2.0 is more than fast enough. Costs about 50% more than a card though.

There are other threads that deal with the issue of USB2 vs. FireWire (IEE1488)

It is generally accepted that although USB2 may be faster (for bursts), it does not have a sustained data rate as fast as firewire does.

You really need to think in the $150.00 range for a device thats has hardware encoding for MPEG2 capture, or $300.00 for a Campous AVDC 100 for composite or s-video in DV firewall out..

Yes there is a bunch of $50.00 cards and devices with software encoding that's junk.

If you just want to play around, the above will get you started, but you will soon tied of the poor performance.
