hi !

I have an mpeg file which seems to be in the ASF format
(I don't know nothing about ASF)...
When I try to import this mpeg into nandub, i get this
error message : "not supported : microsoft owns us patent
on the asf format"...
But I need to demux the audio from this file !
How can I achieve this ?
thanks

and try this (http://peque.homeftp.org/~dext/stuff/vdubmod-1.5.1.x-030519.zip)

moved to container forum as its not a codec issue

There is also asftools, which I personally find more reliable:

Since the AsfTools are no longer maintained,

try the Windows Media Stream Editor (wmstreamedt.exe) installed by the Windows Media Encoder:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

you can use that tool to remux / demux asf files (.asf, .wmv, .wma).

The extracted video , should be transcodable by any DirectShow Encoder.

This should also apply for 2 ch audio (WMA).

Regarding 5.1 WMA there arent many non-directshow tools that can handle that.
In fact just foobar2000 (forget Winamp) can correctly play this stuff (at least @ 2ch speaker config).
As for transcoding the foobar2000 wma plugin does a nice 2ch downmix, but there is no way for a true 5.1 conversion (yet), that im aware of.

Adequate sample:

Maybe VideoLAN could output to a 6ch wave, but then youd still need a tool for 6 mono wavs extraction.

Actually I am not very enthusiastic about Windows Media, i prefer an open standard or at least a common standard, where multiple companies are involved.
But if you consider the Windows Media Move -

on DVD (e.g. Terminator 2 - Extreme Edition) http://www.wmvhd.com ,

the new HIGHMAT format ( http://www.highmat.com ) and

the consideration for the next DISC STANDARD
