View Full Version : Authoring w IFOEDIT: can't display more than 1 subtitle stream

Hi all,

I'm trying to author a movie using IFOEDIT. Indeed, I just want to backup the movie, as I don't feel the need to back-up extras, nor the menu.

However, I always work with 2 languages: English (I'm a original version lover) and French (most of my family do not speak english fluently enough to watch a movie in original version).

This is the first time I author using IFOEDIT. I usually use the Big3 or DVDShrink (if no, or almost no comression is needed).

Note: I failed at reducing size of menu using NUMENU (error produced by the software), and anyway, I now prefer simply dropping menues.

I did not manage to have more than 1 subtitles stream displayed, when playing back my back-up. Yet, I ripped 2 subtitles steams using VOBEDIT, and included both while authoring with IFOEDIT.

I did some tests, and it appears that only the first subtitle included stream can be played.
If I try to put 3 streams, again, only one is played.

I ried to play the results of my tests using PowerDVD, and the IFOEDIT "DVD Play" function.

PowerDVD: does not even mention the existance of any subtitle stream (no mention of any subtitle language... Actually, the menu is like if there was only one stream, but without any language name). However, I can choose wether subtitles should be dispayed or not. If yes, then I can see the first stream included.
IFOEDIT: mention all the subtitles streams, but only the first one can be played.

Note: I looked at the authored IFO files, and the onz for the main movie mention all the subtitle streams.
And when editing one of the VOB fiels of the movie using VOBEDIT, I find traces of every subtitle stream.
Of course, I checked the original, and everything works fine with it.

I did a search on the forum, did not find occurences of this problem yet. Maybe bad search words, but I did several attempts.

Anyone aware of such a problem?

Thanks a lot!
PS: should it be posted in the "Subtitles", or in the "DVD Authoring", or in the "IFO/VOB editors" forum? :-)

More information:

I used IFOEDIT 0.96.

I did this test: trying to recover subtitles that can't be displayed, using VOBEDIT. I was able to recover them, and the resulting files have the same size than the original extracted subtitles files.

I did not compare the content, but I assume that since the sizes are the same...

Now, I'm trying to author using IFOEDIT 0.95.

Other info: I changed the order of the streams, and the first one that I "attach" in IFOEDIT is the one I can watch, whatever the language is.

Help please....

I created IDX and SUB files, converted to SUP, muxed and authored using IFOEDIT....

Now, I still have the same problem: subtitles don't show up at all in PowerDVD!

They only show up in the IFOEDIT DVD player. I tested anotehr movie with only one subtitle stream, and I can't say if a second stream would show up.

I used another computer, and another movie. So there must be something I'm doing wrong...

U977,

I noticed while authoring with IFOEdit that the language ID and some of the aspect ratio information is not set automatically. It may be the same for subtitles. Try to look at the subtitle information in IFOEdit after authoring is complete. You may have them all as the same language or something like that.
I don't mean to mislead you, so please accept my apologies if this information is wrong.

Thanks for your suggestion.

You were right about ratio information. But still, something more was missing.

So, I took another path: I made a backup of the original DVD without compression, using DVD Shrink, but reauthoring and choosing exactly the same content (audio and subtitles streams, in the same order). I used the DVD Shrink IFO files with my VOB files created using authoring of IFOEDIT. Then I just did a "Get VTS sectors" on my IFO about to be burned. It seems to work: subtitles are displayed, and are named correctly!

I found no other working way than this one. I hope that it is not a non working solution... It works with PowerDVD and "DVD Preview" of IFOEDIT. Hope I did not forget anything else.

Just out of curiosity, try to compare the two IFO's, see what the differences are. This may be useful information.

Step added: chapters were not at the correct place anymore, so I also had to use IFOUPDATE in "Standard mode", with original IFO = the one produced by DVD Shrink that was fixed by "GET VTS Sectors" in the previous step (because it had the original cell times, thus the wrong ones for my final video), and the authored IFO = the one produced by IFOEDIT (because it had the correct celltimes).

The final result game me proper chapters jumps, and the subtitles are displayed like a charm even in PowerDVD.

My previous solution only worked for one DVD...

Here is a solution that should work for most (all?) DVDs:
