Ok, this is the first movie I have come across that has this vob file layout. The main movie is in the vob set vts_06_xx. . . this is normal enough. However, another part of the movie resides in vts_08_xx. I would like to rip this movie to two dvdrs as provided by the ifoedit guide on doom9. Can anyone help me out with this problem? Thanks

Okay, take it easy. There must be a reason for a movie to be split in 2 VTS, and certainly there is a noticeable pause during VTS transition while playing on a standalone. Check the following:

1. Is there both widescreen and fullscreen versions on the same disc (I remember that's how it was on MI1 DVD)?
2. If there is only one version, is the first half on the movie in one VTS and the second in another (very unlikely scenario)?
3. Would each VTS fit on one DVD-R?

In the cases above you're in luck because that's exactly how you split the DVD in two: first VTS (#6) goes to one disc, second (#8) to another.

4. If one VTS has much smaller size than another, is it actually a part of the movie? Maybe it's deleted scenes or special features. Remember that contents of different VTS would have different title numbers. Find out, which titles reside in both VTS in question, and play them separately with a software player. IfoEdit can help you here.

If one of the VTS turns out to be special features, then follow the guide. The only troublesome case would be if a button over video appears sometimes during the movie that leads you to the special features.

Post back your findings if you still can't figure this out.

Unfortunately, I am not that lucky with it being in case 1-3. The separate vts is a part of the movie and cannot fit onto a separate dvdr. IE. VTS_08_1.VOB <--- 1GB and VTS_08_2.VOB <----365MB while the main movie resides in VTS_06_0.VOB through VTS_06_5.VOB. All of these vobs added together come to around 6-7GB which is why I would like to split them into 2 dvdr's. However I am not sure how to approach this with the movie split up into separte VOB files! I hope this information will help shed some light on a solution to this problem.

Well, obviously then your main movie resides in VTS_6 and special features in VTS_8. There is nothing strange about it. Perhaps, you never came across this before because you only backed up DVD-5 until now. Anyway, follow the guides (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdbackup-guides.htm) and keep in mind that your main movie, the one you actually need to split, is in VTS_6. If you use IfoEdit method, load VTS_06_0.IFO and choose Split to 2 DVD-Rs from the VOB Extras menu.

Or maybe you should consider using DVD Shrink to fit the movie onto one DVD-R.

I am sorry for the confusion, I must not have explained myself good enough. VTS_08_1.VOB and VTS_08_2.VOB are not extras, they are in fact part of the movie. This is why I am so confused on what to do because I really need to split this movie up into 2 dvdr's. Dvdshrink is out of the question because there will be too much quality loss in the picture, since the movie is about 6GB. Hope this helps.

That's very unusual for a movie to be split into two VTS. Anyway, since only VTS_6 exceeds the size of DVD-R , use VTS_06_0.IFO in IfoEdit to perform the splitting. Put VTS_8 on the second disc.

Well, the VTS_08_1.VOB files are actually in the first part of the movie. It is a part about 20 minutes into the movie. So would I put it on the first disk then? I do not know how well that would work out. Anyone have an opinion?

You have to ensure you're making correct assumptions. Please try this experiment: play the movie on a standalone and in the beginning notice the title number on the DVD player display. Fast forward to the point just before you believe VTS 8 ends (20 min into the movie). If you notice there is a pause at this point and the title number changes on the display, that would be a confirmation that movie is indeed split into two VTS, even though it doesn't make any sense. However, if the title number on the display at the beginning of the movie is the same as at the end, it would mean you're missing something, and VTS 8 isn't really a part of the movie. Keep digging. IfoEdit will be your best friend in this.

Ditch the menus and use dvdshrink to split the movie on two discs.
.
This is extremely easy to do. Start end 1-45min disc 1, start end 45-90min disc 2. (example)
