hi im a newb to divX encoding, just wondering what the best one out is. im looking to encode DVDs i own so i can watch them on one of my monitors while i work on the other and pull them up whenever i want w/out searching for the disc. only have a 80GB hd which is cluttered already so 4.7GB is just too much considering i have alot of shows on dvd.

are DVDX and Dr.divX good? i would rather not pay $50, but if it encodes much faster & better quality i might consider it. also is it faster to encode it if i ripped it to the hdd then encode it? this is all hypothetical of course.:) much thanks

From my own experience, GordianKnot (free) is the best option. Dr.Divx is not bad, though still a bit buggy and mind you you cannot encode with xvid coded in Dr.Divx. As for DVDx, I have never used it, so I do not know about this one.
Also, if you want a simple encoding, AutoGKnot might be the answer.
First I started using GordianKnot, then I used Dr.Divx for a while, but found it buggy and unreliable, so I came back to Gknot.
Gknot is the winner, it is not straightforward and simple interface, but once you get used it, you will appreciate it.

Follow Doom9's DivX guide -- most, if not all, of your questions will be answered.

You mentioned your hard drive's cluttered
One of the best features of DVDx is that it can transcode direct from the DVD - something i came to love since i was working on a laptop with a small hard drive. I guess it's not perfect but i always found it was a great all in one tool (the program itself is still free i think)
