RW is a logo of DVD+RW Alliance (http://www.dvdrw.com/) that developed the "plus" format. This logo is a counterpart of DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.com/) logo with the letters DVD on top of stylized disc. I suppose they chose RW logo because they released +RW media/burners before +R, which seemed unusual. To distinguish between +R and +RW, they now put either DVD+R or DVD+ReWritable under the logo.
DVD-R usually have DVD Forum logo with DVD-R underneath. The two formats "plus" and "dash" are technically competitors and hence they don't use the same logo. However, some companies like Sony, Mitsubishi, and Yamaha are behind the both standards.
@dimmer: :goodpost:
@Wolfman: It seems you were mislead by the RW logo like many others.
@all: If you see "RW" on a DVD recordable, don't believe that it's a rewritable medium! Read further... As dimmer pointed out, look for "DVD+R" or "DVD+ReWritable".
DVD-R / DVD-RW is not that misleading; you get what you expect.
