View Full Version : Ripping with Avermedia w/ Phillips SAA7134 chip

I borrowed this Avermedia (dunno the model number, it's bought as a Medion from Aldi stores...)
Vdub (the one from doom9's site) doesn't work for me, so I use Virtual VCR.
Averege filesize when capturing in 720x576 is about 1200 per minute. Now I've got a 80 gb as a primary disc, all other discs run on a seperate controller and SKIP FRAMES AS HELL if I use them. Capturing 90 minutes of movie is bit of a problem. I then tried to use Huffyuv as compression, but then it skips frames (It's about half the filesize..). Maybe my computer isn't big enough to compress when capturing.
I noticed the same skippin then capturing with the original software. No matter which format, AVI, MPEG1/2, SVCD or VCD, it skips frames.
Only VVCD works.

Any suggestions?

My rack:
AMD 1700+ TB 0.13
2x256 MB PC2100 Apacer
WinXP Pro w/ SP1
And my not-so-proud Westerm Digital 7200rpm 8mb as stand-alone Primary on IDE1

Ouups, forgot to tell what I'm capturing from:
My Force D-Master 1145 from Scart to S-Video (with one of those converters) and it works GREAT :)

Hi, its the same card I called Phillips in the Test DVD a few threads below!
I have an ATI Rage ViVo and this Medion card in my Computer at the moment and I'm most impressed with the Medion quality.
frame dropping is connected to all srts of things as I learned in this thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71144
But the problems can be found.
I tried with all the free capturing programs out there and many that confess to capture directly to Mpeg.
Its also interesting to find that some will capture with the ATI but not with the Medion and visa-versa.
The Medion/Phillips/? card gives trouble with most prgrams causing errors about "vertical sync interupts" but does deliver an excellent picture.
Huffyuv doesn't work for me either so you're not alone there.
I use PicVideo MJPEG for AVI and its very reliable.
I also tried to capture directly to MPEG but the supplied PowerVCR is not compliant with the DVDSpec only having 44.1khz audio.
There follow on program "PowerDirector" has the right format and captures well to AVI but again throws frames when using the internal DVD / mpeg templates.

The best of them all for MPEG is built in to the MainConcept Mpeg Encoder and doesn't drop a single frame on my machine ! Horray !
BUT you have to turn "preview" off for it to work with the Medion card unfortunately otherwise you get a program error.
I looked on Aldis website - there is no update for the driver...

Hey Nice one with a card of my type ;-p

I've noticed the colors are very blury, specially red. White doesn't show as white, but some sort of Whiteyellow??

The program that was bundled with it is called TVFM, and it states:
----------------------
Format : MPEG-II

Audio:
Format: MPEG-I Layer II
Sample rate : 48kHz 16 bits Stereo
Bit rate : 240Kbits/s

Video:
Videostørrelse : 720*576
Framerate : 25.00
Bit rate : 10000Kbits/s
----------------------

See, 48kHz audio... But I can't turn the overlay off in that program!

I'll try the MJPEG codec for sure.

Btw. by "skipping" frames I didn't mean dropping... I have very few "dropped" frames.
It's kinda like it's missing some frames somehow?

Dropped frames will often appear as duplicate frames, in order to retain framerate.

oki

It works now! :) I read somewhere in this forum (can't remember where, maybe the faq) that you should try lowering your screen resolution. And it worked right away. And I tried the MJPEG codec from jpg.com and it's great.
I can't get Virtual VCR to work with MJPEG though, but the original program works now.

I saw that it uses an InterVIdeo SDK if that means anything. Is it good?

And now the audio is out of sync. damn AVI format !
