There have been rumors that SOME 8x burners will be able to be upgraded via firmware update, but I'm very skeptical.

While no company has come out and said they expect to have a firmware available, several companies have said there will NOT be a firmware upgrade to make any existing drive capable of writing to dual layer.
As far as LG goes, I'd say no, there will not be a firmware update available to support it. You'll need to buy a new one.

It's been reported that dual layer disks will cost approximately twice as much as single layer disks.
Of course this is open to wide interpretation. I would bet this means a little more than twice the price of the most expensive, non-sale, singly-packaged media. Here in the states that would put the price at about $7 or $8 each. Affordable DL media (under $4) is probably a year and a half to two years away.
Just my opinion.

driver update? forgetaboutit. drivers have nothing to do with it.. it's the firmware (and of course the hardware has to be right as well)
I'd suggest you all assume that no drive is upgradeable. You think they're going to give you dual layer burning for free if they can sell you a new product? Assume the worst and you cannot be disappointed. Get your hopes up and you'll most likely will be disappointed.
And.. Pioneer's CES show used a hardware modded A06, just so that we are clear on that. Meaning NO manufacturer has so much as shown a single drive that can be upgraded. There might be one or two actual drives where chipset and laser would permit an upgrade, but I suggest you stick to paragraph two of this post.
