I'm trying to back up Patlabor, and I noticed that this disc has a video_ts.vob file that is nearly 500megs.
I looked at the file using DVD2avi and found that this file contains all the DVD-ROM content plus part of the main menu.

What I would like to do is get rid of everything except the main menu. Normally I would strip out the DVD-ROM stuff using ifoedit, but all the contents share the same VOBid. As in, there is only one VOBid.

I've tried numenu4u, but I don't think I could use it to strip out unwanted materials.

So I'm basically stuck right now. I cannot completely blank out the file because I lose part of the main menu.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I could try?

You can run the disc through DVD Shrink and set compression level for all the junk menus to Still Pictures. It will compress them to about 5% of the original size.

I don't think that you're going to be able to fully cut out those parts unless you completly re-author the menu. You might want to try Nero Recode. It should allow you to reduce the unwanted parts down to blank video. That's probably going to be as good as it gets without breaking out Maestro or Scenarist and redoing the the whole thing.

Is it possible to modify the video_ts.vob file in DVDshrink. I think I tried to, but was unsuccessful..

I'll try it when I get home from work

Here's another idea...not especially easy but should work (if recode doesn't).

Use vobedit to extract out the m2v, use an mpeg2 editor to losslessly cut out the menu part (cut only on iframes...e.g. using tmpgenc) and then transode the remainder to buggery (e.g. just keep re-transcoding at 70 percent using rejig until the video is small - and is unwatchable of course). Merge the m2vs back together and remux the joined m2v back into menu vob using vobedit. Write new ifos using ifoedit (this step may not be necessary, not sure).

Try using MenuEdit (or another application that can replace individual cells, although I can't name any). Replace the cells you don't want with a blank one, and run it through IfoEdit to correct the navigation packs. I've done this many times without any problems.

@Jay Noname

Sorry for the my last post. I thought you wanted to blank out the whole VOB. Anyways, give DVDStripper a try.

Thanks for all the great suggestions

I went back to DVDshrink last night, and when I expanded the main menu section I actually saw two main menus. One corresponded to video_ts.vob, and the other was VTS01. I shrunk the first menu to still pictures and that brought the file down from 500 to 33 megs.

thanks again for your help
