noob help adding subs to a video

i need to add subtitles to a movie i encoded, but the program i use(xmpeg) for some reason wont display the subtitles. i can use vobsub to get the *.sub file, but how can i ass subtitles to a movie. thanks for any help.

and supply some more info. I don't know xmpeg.
What do U want to do ? DVD to dvd or dvd to svcd or what ?
And from which original movie ?
Is the movie PAL or NTSC ?
Did U read the guides ?
We cannot possibly know all the prog out there and most of us use freeware progs. Specify the Q, have patience and maybe some1 will help U. One day ain't enough.......(U posted the first request 23th and the second 24th). Take it easy pal and give us what we need to help U.

i'm doing dvd to avi, i think the movie is in ntsc, the movie is 'Man on the Train.' could someone point me in the direction to some tutorials? sorry for expecting help so soon, i though this would be a simple question.
