I'd like to author a DVD, but I've got a very bad sound and I don't think it needs more than 128 kbps in AC3. But is this a standard audio bitrate for DVD? Can I use 96 kbps, for example?

The minimum bitrate for AC3 is (correct me if I'm wrong) 48kbps per channel, so for stereo 2x 48kbps = 96kbps.

Scenarist AC3 encoder allows minimum 56kbps for 1 channel sound and 96kbps for stereo. I'm pretty sure we can trust these numbers.

According to Ralph LaBarge's book dvd authoring and production here are the audio rates
Channels- Khz- Valid Data Rate Range-Recommended Data Rate
1/0 48 64000-448000 96000
2/0 48 96000-448000 192000
3/0 48 128000-448000 288000
2/1 48 128000-448000 288000
3/1 48 192000-448000 384000
2/2 48 192000-448000 384000
3/2 48 224000-448000 448000
Hope that helps and clarifies
