View Full Version : Ulead DVD Workshop 2 Question vs Maestro - does it transcode CVD res files 2nd time?

Hiya,

what it is,
I currently use Dvd Maestro to author the majority of my films.
When I get my movies, what I do is, reduce them to CVD resolution from the avi or dvd using DVD2svcd with CCE, and sometimes keep ac3 and other times use mp2 audio. DVD Maestro has been the best option so far as it allows the subtitle streams etc, and multi vts etc whilst still being simple to use. What I dislike about it however, is having it need to parse every single file which can take ages and slow down the pc.

I then later tried the DVD Lab program....that was a nice easy to use app, which I noticed didn't have to parse the files all the time, and having built in menu making tools. A Very good app, however a big downside is it being Multi VTS meaning I couldn't mix ac3 with mp2, nor could I mix 4:3 with 16:9 on same disc, so in most cases it isn't much use for me.

Now that I see this Ulead DVD Workshop 2 is out now, I'm tempted to get it as it seems like it may be just what I'm looking for....menu creation etc with built in templates (can look better than my basic photoshop made menu for maestro), aswell as supporting subs, multi VTS etc. Hopefully not too good to be true.

Now the main questions I ask.

I remember some time back trying some ulead app in the past. Back then, even tho it was a CVD (or SVCD) resolution file, so therefore dvd compliant, it still was adamant I believe on wanting to retranscode with its own built in tools the existing mpg file - wasting time and quality. Does anybody please know if this will allow import of ready made in CCE mpv and ac3 files at CVD and svcd resolution without it needing to reconvert the video stream yet again. I really hope it does not.

Secondly, I remember some works my friend made as SVCDs to dvd using a Ulead app in the past...which was originally svcd with mp2 audio, about 1.4gb. the resulting file after authoring was about 3gb as it had converted the audio to uncompressed pcm....

basically I just want to know if this app will accept my ac3, mpv, and mp2 streams without forcing it to recode them, by choosing "no compression" or anything like that. Also do you know if it parses like maestro, or if skips all that like dvdlab?

many thanks in advance,
Tuck
