View Full Version : Entire .DAT Not Loading?

Attempting to convert a few VCDs to DIVX. I copy the .DAT from the VCD and begin to load in VirtualDub.

VDub loads 6/10 of the file and then throws a few warnings. 'Audio->Error Mode' is set to conceal, and the log shows the following:

[i] Starting up: VirtualDub build 18160/release

MPEG: Opening file "D:\AVSEQ02.DAT"

[!] MPEG: Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp found in video stream 0 at byte position 71202180, from 36320712 to 490291587. This may indicate an improper join.

[!] MPEG: Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp found in video stream 0 at byte position 147341124, from 75185577 to 7118637381. This may indicate an improper join.

Any idea how I can get the entire file to load?

I might be wrong, but I think these implies your DAT file is corrupt and Vdub could not load properly.

Using avisynth frame server setup can help you to load all the file in this case, I think.

I was able to find avisynth on the download page (doom9.org) but I have no clue how to use the program; is there a tutorial somewhere that explains how to use the frame server setup?

little suggestion:
use www.vcdgear.com to convert .dat to mpeg and enable the error correction, before feeding VirtualDub(Mod) with it.

I tried running the .dat file through vcgear, but when I load the resultant .mpg I get the same error (only 13 minutes of the 20 minute file load).

Is there some way I can get the whole file to load, errors and all?

I did not see a command on the avisynth.org site to load a .dat file, so I am using a two-pronged aproach that uses both of your suggestions. The process is:

(1) Load the problematic .DAT in vcdgear with the 'fix errors' option selected to create a .mpg

(2) Create a .avs file to load the .mpg into vdub. The file is a simple one line script: DirectShowSource("c:\folder\myclip.mpg")

Turns out only 1 of every 8 or 1 of every 9 files is problematic. If I tell vdub to ignore audio errors, I'm able to convert straight from .dat to .divx without using the steps above.

The procedure above got me farther than any other attempts, but the program crashed before file conversion could finish. I will try again and post my results.

The error message I'm getting now is:

An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'QUARTZ'.

Any idea what that error message means or how to get around it?

I often get the same problem ( Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp .............)

all that i do is use tmpgenc and convert them to the same format that they were in and then use vdub to convert them, works beautifully.

techZ, I tried your suggestion but TMPGenc quits at the same point (6/10ths of the way through)

Any other suggestions? I can even provide a link to the file in .mpg or .dat if one of our helpful community members would like to take a crack at it :)

A quick update:

I've posted this issue to the VDub forums as well, here's a link (http://virtualdub.everwicked.com/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=6149). Still looking for a solution.

Tried your suggestions, but VDubMod won't display the file past the offending frame :(

No worries; the video set I was attempting to backup is in the process of being released to DVD.
