Is it possible to use .idx and .ifo file to turn TEXT-BASED subs on and off? To my knowledge this only works with the .sub bitmap-based files. Is there a way to turn text subs on and off? If so which format does it need to be in and do I need to use the .ifo file?

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,

Chip

I'm not sure that exactly understand what is your problem...
Every player has option to turn on/off textbased subtitles. Plus to load any such file from any location.

Text based subtitles doesn't require idx file, they have all timings inside.

Try to rip some sub with Subrip, and you will see.

How about this:

To view a video with text subs in the same directory, does the machine HAVE to have DirectVobSub to display them in the video?

It's just one of solutions. Which player you use?
