Hi
I haven't lurked in the forum for a long time (probably not since 2001).

Anyway, I want to buy some music-dvd's.

But I what should I get, NTSC format or PAL?

My player accepts both, but I'm thinking qualitywise,

if the video is recorded in NTSC- then it would be worse quality if I bought a PAL-dvd containing this video, due to the transforming NTSC->PAL.

Are musicvideos shot in NTSC or PAL, or are they shot on film like a movie?

If shot in NTSC/PAL, how can I ever know what format the video was originally; American artists->NTSC europeian artists->PAL?

Another thing:

TV-shows from US, are they taped in NTSC, or in taped like a movie? Or both accure?
If in NTSC, it's best to get TV-show dvd's from U.S...

There are DVDs with a High-Qality-Conversion. You can't say ALL converted Videos do have a worse quality.

European Videos are shot in PAL, US or japaneses Videos are shot in NTSC.
Some are progressive, some interlaced. Some are converted a bad, some are converted a good way. You will find anything...

Yes.

Ultimatly there is no real perceptual quality difference between NTSC and PAL. So there is no reason to go out of your way to get one or the other. It is better to get the sources in their native format if possible. But outside that don't worry.

Well, that's exactly what I was thinking, if you read my first post, but there's often no way for me to know what format the sources are.

I want to buy the Twin Peaks-series boxset, but don't know if I should buy the PAL or NTSC version.

Does anyone know if it was shot directly to NTSC-tape?

Well I've got a friend of mine over in the USA right now 'filming' a music video and a few TV commercials.

Note the emphases on the word 'filming'.

If you don't care about the increased resolution from PAL, you're probably best off with NTSC. If it was originally FILM you can simply IVTC, if it was originally PAL the conversion back is also simple, and if it was originally NTSC then you lost nothing. Downsides to PAL:
If it was originally FILM, it could've been converted to NTSC by means of telecine and that NTSC converted to PAL again, causing jerky motion and fieldblends.
If it was originally NTSC, it's the same as with the above case except you won't have very jerky motion, only a lot of fieldblends.
