hi all,
when I burn VCD, SVCD or DVD with Nero6 there is always that question with burning Mode 1 or Mode 2.
I'm not able to find references to this in the forum, nor that the Nero help file is much help and I'm getting curious.
I would like to know what does it mean burning with one or the other Mode, concerning quality or reproduction, and if the case what would be better.
Thanks in advance,
cinta

1. svcd is burned in mode 2 form 2 always (that's the standard).
2. nero will NOT let u fool around and burn your files in an unsafe mode.
that's all u need to know.
generally speaking, mode 1 is the 'old' mode. it's more compatible with (very) old cd drives. there's only one 'mode 1' method.
mode 2 is a newer method, and if has 2 formats: form 1, and form 2.
mode 2 form 1 is nearly identical to mode 1. same space on the cd, same error correction, etc. if you choose in nero to burn in mode 2, it will use mode 2 form 1. this is the 'safe' format of mode 2.
mode 2 form 2 is a different method. it uses less error correction, and gives u more space to put files on the cd (instead of the area on the cd that's used to correct errors in form 1). nero will NOT use this mode when u burn files, NEVER. it's only used with specific contents that are designed especially for this mode. i.e. vcd, svcd, etc. nero will only use this mode when u use a wizard that guides u in compiling a cd with one of these specific content types.
now, some time ago, few smart @ss ppl on this forum though 'wow, wouldn't it be cool if we could put movies on the cd using mode 2 form 2? we'll get more space, yay! ;)'. and that's how xcd was invented. xcd uses mode 2 form 2 to put movie files on the cd. it's relatively 'unsafe', but it gives about 800M on a 700M cd. (700 is calculated in mode 1, or mode 2 form 1, which are the 'normal' modes).
ok? ;)
cheers,

thanks avih,
it is all the most kind and illustrating.
I've got a bunch of SVCDs I burned without much knowledge and which don't work properly on a stand alone (after a few secs loading the disk, the movie goes directly to last chapter and you've got to try hard then to bring it to the begining).
I remember just before burning the images Nero would show a small window asking to confirm Mode1 or Mode2, which I chancefully would turn to Mode2 (the number of bits looked higher). Might that have had something to do with this unnormal playing?
thanks again
