Welcome to the forum. First, does your dvd player play avi files. If not then...You must convert the file to mpeg2 and then use a authoring program to ready it for burning. Go here (http://www.doom9.org) and do some basic reading on dvd encoding and the different methods for getting there. There is just too much knowledge you need to aquire to answer in a sentence or two.

Hello, email, and welcome to Doom9's forum.
You need to do a little research, first, regarding the capabilities of your DVD player. There are actually some DVD players that can play certain types of AVI files straight from burned CDs.
I would start by looking up your dvd player's capabilities in the database at www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers to see what kind of media and what kind of formats it might support. Both of these thing will tell you what you can or cannot do for playback.
For media, you'll want to see what burnable DVD formats are supported, and in some cases, what brand limitations there might be. You'll want to do the same for CDs as well, since many DVD players can also play VideoCDs, as well as the few that can play AVI files from Data CDs. Brands of burnable discs are also important, since the dyes used in burnable discs work specifically with certain types of lasers.
Most DVD players can also play VideoCDs. However, there are many different types of VideoCDs, so be sure you understand which VideoCD formats your player supports. This will also play into your selection of options.
You'll then need to determine if you will be making burnable DVDs or burnable CDs, and acquire the appropriate equipment, if you do not have it already.
Then, unless your player is one of the few that can play certain AVIs, you'll need to convert your audio and video into formats compatible with either DVD or your selected VideoCD format.
Finally, you'll need to author the DVD or VideoCD.
Doom9 has step by step guides for these, including links to the software used (most free, some inexpensive, some extremely expensive) at www.doom9.org. To convert from AVI files, you should look in the Format Conversion Guides.
This, I think, will get you started. If not, it will at least get you looking in the right directions.
Good luck!

Click on the second link jggimi gave you. Click on Guides. Click on format conversions. On that page, you'll find two choices for converting AVI files. Homepage > Guides > Format conversions > Pick one
