is there a way i can take the people singing out of songs so only the background music is heard? some people may had heard of this, and people usually refer to this type of file as "midi", like only the background music, no one singing

EDIT: Well, with mp3 or wav you can do this:
You can remove everything from the center and keep the sound which comes from the far left and right channels. Voice is usually in the center so it will be removed this way. This effect is often called "Karaoke"
But also bass, drums etc are in the center so they will also be removed. So you will end up with a pretty crappy sounding song, but at least the voice is gone :p
There are winamp plugins which do this. I think DeFX is the best one as it is able to save some of the bass in the center.
Of course the result is very dependant on the song itself. For instance mono songs won't work at all!

MIDI just happens to be an electronic music standard -- Musical Instrument Digital Interface -- which is why music created with that standard may not include voice.

I was under the impression that MIDI allowed you to include custom sounds within the file itself? If so, couldn't you just use that to store voice tracks in, then just play them at the proper time?
