View Full Version : Slow Encode speeds with CCE

I have an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ and the speeds I get with CCE while making DVD backups or DVD2SVCD is varying like a b***h.
Just yesterday I tried to backup a DVD which had a 3 hour movie and it was going at at speed of 0.953 (So imagine a first VAF pass and then the 3 leadup passes = 4 passes = little more that 12 hours). A few days ago I did a backup of another dvd and that was going at 1.3 speed. Am I doing something wrong or are AMD Athlons just weak in this process compared to Intel.

Can some people post their encoding speeds so that I can get a general Idea of what speeds I should be getting and what optimizations I should be making.

My computer specs:
Athlon XP 2200+ (266Mhz bus) (no overclocking)
ASUS A7V333 Mobo
1GB DDR PC2700 (i know I am not making full use of these since FSB is 266)
80GB WD w/8MB Buffer (for WinXP)
160GB Maxtor w/8MB Buffer (for DVD rips)
64MB ATI RADEON 7000 (everyone gasps! I am not a gamer)
Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1
Toshiba 16X DVD-ROM sd-M1712 (without read limit)
NEC 1300A Dual format DVD burner.

I am looking to make a new (budget) rig for DVD backups and encoding process. I am trying to choose an Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor since Prescott has lowered the prices of the P4s a little bit and because it is getting good reviews at content creations at anandtech.com.

Any ideas as to what is going wrong? Is my system messed up or are these typical speeds i should see with the Athlon Processor?

Let me know. Thanks.

regards,
Neo

There's a speed test in the CCE forum. Your speed figures look normal; be aware of the fact that AviSynth filtering has an effect on encoding speed. The film's aspect ratio is important, too, because the number of pixels to be encoded can differ much.

Yes, speed varies much depending from source's resolution, filters etc.
But you can speedup it making less pass :)

& don't expect much higher speeds with P4 (i tested it).

With an XP2000+, 720x576 pal dvd source (with avisynth/no filtering) i usually get 1.3

0.953 seems a bit slow (i dunno DVD2SVCD internals, maybe in this case filtering/ivtc/deinterlacing was needed)

Actually I wasn't talking about DVD2SVCD. I was using DoitFast4U!.
I have 3 passes in there for CCE and with the default settings. for the rest of the stuff. also it was a single PGC VTS (just one title in the whole DVD). This was DVD-VIdeo backup up to a DVD-R.
CCE Speeds: 0.953

I just went through the conversion process in DVD2SVCD (DVD-> SVCD instead of DVD-> DVD-R). However cce did 4 passes (excluding the vaf file round).
CCE Speeds: 1.15
With IVTC

This is strange. Source was 16:9 but was encoded as 4:3 by using add borders script in AviSynth.

How the heck is the SVCD faster, I though DVD is faster if you do not have to deal with resizing and IVTCing?

Any ideas. I post my CCE File as reference.

Please recommend.

What happens to your CCE encoding speed, if you change your AVS script to:
---AVS Begin---
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\AVISYN~1.5PL\Mpeg2dec\MPEG2D~1.DLL")
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\AVISYN~1.5PL\INVERS~1\decomb.dll")
mpeg2source("F:\KHNH\DVD2AV~1.D2V")
Telecide()
Decimate(5)
BicubicResize(720,360,0.0,0.6)
AddBorders(0,60,0,60)
Import("F:\KHNH\ResampleAudio.avs")
ResampleAudio(44100)
ConvertToYUY2()
----AVS End----
I assume the speed will drop below 0.9 on your machine. The more pixels to encode, the more time gets consumed.

am i doing something insanely stupid when im assembling my pc because this is not what i expected. people encoding PAL dvds (which contain more lines) are getting better speeds than me.

Same thing happened when i assembled a PC with an athlon64.
I got speeds around 1.3 when people are easily getting 1.6-1.8 and these are ntsc dvds i believe.

neo
