View Full Version : What is a benchmark ripping time?

I'm new at this game and have read a lot of tips on how to rip dvd's to hard-drive quicker, however seeing as I have only had a PC since December 03 I have no frame of reference as to what is a good ripping time (not speed I get a bit confused whnever I see something like 12x)
Obviously it depends on your PC speed, memory, software etc but how long does it generally take to rip a single layer 4.7gb disc to hard-drive?
I started out at about 25 mins and have now got it down to around about 15mins with no compression but it can take up to 50mins when doing a disc which needs high compression.
Also I think a good idea would be to have a bench mark program so as newbies like myself know when something is amiss (I didn't know that all of the little icons in my system tray for instance ate up memery!)
For the record my system/software is:-
Windows XP
DVD Shrink
AMD 2400
512MB ram
120gb HDD
16x Sony DVD-ROM
I have DMA mode enabled and have the DVD-ROM connected as a slave to the HDD.
Any feedback would be appreciated

A full disc ie. original should take about 15/20mins to rip...to compress may take up to a further 40 mins or so....so long as its doin it ok time shouldn't be a worry ( the world wasn't made in a day):p

Thanks, with no frame of reference I wouldn't know slow from fast. However it doesn't seem like I have any problems if thats about an average time.

I have a TDK 420N burner
Athlon XP 1600+ Palomino
512MB 266mhz RAM
KT400 chipset Epox MB
120GB Maxtor HD with 2MB Cache (I think)
Using DVD Shrink, the release before this last one that Doom just posted in his news section I get the following depending on the length of the movie:
Reading Disc: 1:30-2:15 minutes
Encoding the main movie: 18-24 minutes
Using an older beta copy of ImgTool:
Making the imagefile: 12-16 minutes (guessing)
Using DVD Decryptor to burn:
Burning to a 2.4x DVD+R 20-22 minutes
Burning to a 4x DVD+R about 17 minutes, but I've only done one of those.
For me, I have a computer set up for my wife using my hand me down parts. Since she doesn't use it much, it works great for this.

Retail dvd or dvd-r?
.
Retail 4.7 = 5-9 min
dvd-r = 15-30min
.
Dvd-rom can play a major roll when it comes to time. I have a samsung, i've read in some of the posts that pioneer dvd-rom's are great for speed. NOT combo drive,burner, but just -rom.
.
Do a quick search in the forums for ripping speeds.
I can't find the post but someone with a pioneer dvd-rom said they got 12-16x rip speeds.

I've just bought a sony DDU1621 16x DVD-ROM to use as the ripping drive. However it was oem and hence no software I checked out the Sony website and there are no drivers for this as they are built into Windows XP. I have a feeling (being a newbie, a feeling is as close as I get to knowledge)that while XP is a good Operating system it is not exactly the best when it comes to installing new hardware, therefore I'm not getting for want of a better phrase a "tuned" performance.
My burner is a Sony DRU-014A, it burns a 4.7Gb disc in 16mins at 4x speed and does this consistently. I don't see any way of speeding this up signifigantly and besides 16mins isn't that long.
As for ripping either commercial or DVD-r they take about the same time when they are both 4.7gb. Should there be a difference for these?
I've had a search on the forum and can't find this, so just direct me to the link if there is one.
A question on drive speeds, how is drive speed calculated? and what speed does a one speed drive run at? ie KB's per second.
I have found it confusing that a 4x speed drive can write 2 hours of information in 16 minutes, therefore a does a standard household DVD player play at less than 1 speed?
Thanks

CDROM drives:
1x = 150 KBps
2x = 300 KBps
...
8x = 1200 KBps
DVDROM drives:
1x = 1.35 MBps
2x = 2.7 MBps
4x = 5,41 MBps
...
I have found it confusing that a 4x speed drive can write 2 hours of information in 16 minutes, therefore a does a standard household DVD player play at less than 1 speed?
It is not so straightforward as in Audio CDs where is constant quality of the sound. In DVD VIDEO you can use different bitrates for included streams (total bitrate for all streams -> audio + video + subtitle shouldn´t be higher than aproximately 9800 KBps, but of course it could be lower :)) therefore information from producer that "this medium can hold 2 hour of video" is not correct - it depends only on encoded bitrate...
Hope this helps ;).
