hi. i've decided i need to get some decent firewall and antivirus software.

i am currently using zonealarm (free version) and Grisoft AVG (again, free).

i am willing to spend as much money necessary.

i was going to get Zone alarm pro becuase it seems good but when i read it, it said that it also had built in virus protection and ad blocking, things that AVG does as well. i don't really want to have two programs doing the same thing.

is it ok if i just get zonealarm pro? or is AVG also necessary becuase it specialises in virus protection?

are there any other good ones anyone recommends?

NOD32 (http://www.nod32.com) is the best antivirus.

I use Fli4l (http://www.fli4l.de/english/e_fli4l.htm). It is very useful because the Firewall IS secured. I´ve tested different ways of hacking my system from outside, but without success.

But I do not use any Anti-Virus program. For nerly 3 years I was free from any virus :D

i actaully don't have a spare old pc, but i could find one. is it much better than getting a router with a built in firewall?

I've been using Clark Connect for a while now, seem excellent, especially when you think its free for home use. Have a look: http://www.clarkconnect.com

been using the free AVG for more than a year, i think it's great (although it never detected any virus for me, i simply had none so far).

but today, by brother (which is a 'normal' user) told me he got infected by one of those new worms. i uninstalled his norton AV 2002 (no longer updated since it was prepaid for a year), and installed AVG.

bam. 7 files infected, 2 different worms. cleaned successfully. it has a nice module (can be disabled) that scans boot viruses. it loads just when windows starts loading, and disables and viruses that load before windows is fully loaded. it detected them nicely before windows was fully loaded. good. then i made a dangerous test. i executed one of the infected attachments in his mail deleted folder. AVG cought it nicely, and disabled access to that file.

the AVG exe was last updated on 2004-03-05. regular virus database updates are always available, and usually there's a new database update every few days.

for firewall, i've been using segate personal firewall for quite a while as well. the free version is nicely configurable, and seems to work well. kerio personal firewall is a variant of segate P.F.. never tried it but i know many that like it.

how do you know you have no viruses when you have no antivirus running?
