View Full Version : i got a question about Robshot/RoBa method for CCE

hi everyone. i'm just new to CCE, always used dvdshrink till now,
but i feel quite confident to dive in the cce sea looking for wonders.
so i read a lot about cce and everything related to it and particularly
the guides from doom9 (always enlightening man, thx), but there's really
a thing i can't understand in the Robshot/RoBa methods:
why do you do the 1st pass as 1-pass VBR using Q factor instead of
simply doing the 2-3 passes in multipass VBR giving the average bitrate?
i mean i can understand it in the RoBa method that was born with
SVCD creation in mind and it uses the size of the .mpv file created in this first pass to determine
the number of CDs needed & adjust the average bitrate this way for next passes.
but in the case of a DVDR backup, we got a predetermined size of 4480MB
let's say (or a bit less with a safe margin), so (simplifing things with a movie-only backup)
dividing this by the length of the movie and considering how many audio tracks
(and their relative bitrate) we simply got our maximum average bitrate for our video.
so why don't we start everything as a multipass VBR in CCE with the calculated average bitrate?
hope some expert can help me understanding, thx.

PS: do you use the "revised" settings by Bach for the Robshot method for
dvdr backup or stick with the robshot ones (that Bach claims to be conceptually erroneous)?
could you share your settings so that i can clear up some doubts? thx a lot to all of you guys,
sorry if i'm asking too much, but i'm hungry for know-how to start my experience.

Hi MiCK76 & welcome,

Why use OPV? Simple answer; using one pass variable (OPV) encoding you can get very similar quality to 3 or 4 pass VBR encoding. Thus OPV has a massive speed advantage. The only problem is how to determine the Q factor. That's where RoBa's iterative technique comes in (implemented in D2SRoBa).

If you just want movie only with high quality then use D2SRoBa with DVD2SVCD (in DVD2DVD mode). If you want menus/multiple titles etc, then use the 'Big three'.

Regards,
Bob.

Also you can use QCCE by jonny to get the Q value. Then You can use the 1 Pass Quality Mode. I do this for month and get always HQ DVDs. I wrote a guide for this methode on my page.

visit the guide (http://www.rj-elektronik.de/avideo/maineng.php?set=drp22guide)

personally i use OPV if i want to create a 'CQ_VBR' file, otherwise ill use a bitrate and multipass.

but its all personal preference.

thx a lot to you all. so if i want a 2to4 passes i can start with the
multipass vbr process from the beginning, but a OPV with the right Q factor (let's use QCCE for it) speeds things up and gives good results too.
@Amnon82: really good guide man! thx.

Hello there MiCK76... For simplicity I use DVD2DVD-R, all you have to do is follow this link: http://www.mrbass.org/dvd2dvdr/ and download the software there and then go to the guide, it is so easy and you get exactly what you want and it does it all for you, once you hit "GO" you don't have to touch it again until the process is all done and ready for burning. It automatically opens up CCE and starts encoding depending on settings you decide to use, follow the guide and you won't have to worry about anything. I spend 1 minute typing settings, that's all and then just wait until process is done.... 6 hrs or so. Even has option to shut down computer when done :O)

I used to do it with the guides in here but those take too much of my personal time, DVD2DVD-R answered all my prayers and the best thing about it is that it is completely free.

Check it out friend.
