.mov to .avi

I really need help on how to convert a .mov to .avi. I have tried quicktime Pro 6.0, Rad Tools, TMPGenc 2.5 Plus, and Main Concept Mpeg Encoder. All have not worked out very well with transfering a .mov to .avi. Help would greatly be appreciated.

first open the .mov in quicktime and have a look at the file info and report which audio and video format you have in there
