Hi Guys and Girls, I start a new project called COCOC. I wanted to create my SVCDs and DVDs completely with freeware.
Now I'm using VirtualDubMod and ffvfw for this.

First of all download the COCOC SAMPLER (http://www.rj-elektronik.de/avideo/main.php?set=Sampler) to see the quality.
This is the worst quality I can do with ffvfw :D. See the sample to understand this...
If I get it, I'll upload a full guide for creating COCOC SVCDs.
Stay tuned

I encoded the first 2 pices of the SG1 Season 7. 84 min movie in fullscreen. I got a 510 MB big M2V-file. So it is possible to squize 2.5 Hours 2.35:1 Movie on a 80 Min Disc in HQ SVCD. Great news, isn't it?:D

I think I break the record in monolog-posting here!
Here is a report about FFVFW and how it works:

The guide is really interesting and I will try out this encoding mode soon, but I have some suggestions:
1.
I recommend to use a modified version of mpeg2dec3.dll and dvd2avi, because of the "5 frames lost" problem. I've found these tools on Donald Graft's site:
http://neuron2.net/fixd2v/decodefix100.zip
2.
Why are you using Dual Channel mode in the guide for audio? Dual Channel contains 2 separate mono channels and usually used to store two _different_ mono audio languages (eg. English and German). It is wiser to use Joint-Stereo for 128kbps or Stereo for 192 or 224 kbps. MP2 is using intensity stereo for Joint-Stereo frames so you can't do a Dolby Surround downmix since high frequencies are encoded as mono. Surround downmix can only be used for 192 or 224 kbps Stereo MP2 (not Dual Channel!).
Psychoacoustic mode 2 is also recommended.
3.
The Quality setting in ffvfw works as the following formula:
Average quantizer =
(Max P quant-Min P quant) x ((100-Quality)/100)+Min P quant.
So if you are doing a 45/2/2-2-2/3-3-3/20 encode the average quant will be (3-2) x 0.8 + 2 = 2.8 (every 5th frames /P,I/ will get quant 2, others will get quant 3).
If you set quality to 100, every I and P frames will get quant 2, B-frames will get quant 3 (see below, why).
About b-frames: if you set B multiplier to 1.45, B offset to 1.25 and
you have a quant 2 P frame, the B frame(s) next to it will get
2x1.45+1.25=4.15 (rounded down ~) 4 quant. If you have a quant 3 P
frame, this value is 3x1.45+1.25=5.6 ~ 5. But you set the Max B quant to 3 so the codec cuts the quantizer to 3! Why not set max B quant to 6?
Despite some minor "misunderstading" in your guide, it's OK and very
useful for those who are new to creating hq SVCDs. I always use bbMPEG - myself - for encoding, but I will try ffvfw out.
Keep up the good work!
