I have several instructional videos that i want to back up before the tapes crap out. I have tried capturing with 9800 AIW and it refuses to capture...... says video is copyrighted. Then i tried with VirtualDubMod... it captured but on playback i got nothin but a green screen with a very small horizontal portion of the video at the top.

Anyone know how i can get around this?

Thanks in advance :)

Do a search on the word "macrovision" in this forum (and google) and see what comes up for an explanion of why this is happening.

I have never had problems with Macrovision crap, you know why?, because I use a TV card with the BT878 chip.

Sell your 9800 AIW and get a decent TV card with BT878 chip, S-Video and composite.

Problem solved.

The AIW incorporates Macrovision protection.

There was a "fix" for this some time ago, but the author
withdrew it because it didn't work on newer drivers.

I think that you're stuck.

Best bet is to get a NON-ATI "TV" card.

But watch out for the "CS" chip cards; they have the
capabilty of having Macrovision protection enabled (sorry,
don't recall the exact chip, don't know the pin; Leadtek
"Expert" uses it).

I'm interested in what you finally decide to do.

There's an ATI macrovision removal utility in the download section on the main page http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/SupportUtils/DisableATIMacrovisionDetection.zip that has worked for me with the 7200 and 7500 ATI AIW.

almost all chips have macrovision detection capabilities. It's a driver issue what happens when it is detected. Some drivers may ignore it, most drivers won't.

Thnx for replies guys :) Well i tried one apparent fix and comp froze up when firing up TV. So, i guess i will ditch plan of capturing with AIW and install my Pinnacle DC30 and try with that. Anyone know if macrovision is a problem with DC30??

Thnx again :)

update.....

DC30 works just fine...... white seems a little blue tho...

I have a little box that goes between the VCR and the device doing the capturing. I bought it at Radio Shack a couple years ago and it has worked very well, cost less than $30. You connect the composite video out from the VCR to the input of the box, then output from the box to the capture. It removes the macrovision stuff very well. I've never had a problem backing up any of my tapes with it. It is called "Video Clarifier" Model VC-3, from Team Products International. Very simple device but works well, uses 4 AA batteries.

Note: I do not use it for any illegal activities, strictly for making backup copies of tapes I legally purchased and use for my own private viewing.

This tool doesnt work with AIW 9000, had the same problem some time ago and gave up.

BTW: For the 7200 you dont need this tool, there is no Macrovision protection with this card
