DVD Decryter reports the Disc ID: RICOHJPN-R01-02
Is this a problem with the media or the burner?

It is a problem with the vendor you bought the high priced "DVD+R 8x media" from. What you received was DVD+R 4x certified media that they are selling at a higher price because they make you believe that it is DVD+R 8x certified media...which it is not.
I would return the media for a refund. If you want RICOHJPN-R01-002 you can buy it all day long for less money at your local Best Buy, Circuit city, CompUSA, Walmart under the brands of Memorex, TDK and perhaps others.
This RITEK 8x DVD+R scam has been going on too long. I have been burned (no pun intended) twice by large well known US internet vendors. Upon questioning they insist that it is true RITEK DVD+R 8x media. When you receive DVD+R 4x certified media they begin to make up stories that range from it is actually 8x, but RITEK was able to borrow the RICOH media code to....it is really better media and you should keep it.
In addition, I would encourage you to go to Reseller Ratings and leave an account of this scam. I have also filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission as many vendors are doing the same thing. Either RITEK is scamming consumers, the vendors or BOTH.

Only certain drives can burn 4x DVD+R media at 8x.
I know my Plextor does...maybe your LG drive doesnt.

This drive is supposed to burn +R at 8x, and the media table (pulled from the firmware I believe) at: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=21473&highlight=gsa4081b
does indeed shows 8x burning on some +R media. My confusion was my media seems to have the same code shown in the table, yet only burns at 2.4x and 4x. It seems I should return this overpriced 4x media to the vendor.

Just one question.
If they're Ritek discs why do they have a RICOH manufacturer code?
I would recomend getting DVDIdentifer to recheck the manufacturer code.

RITEK makes the RICOH media under contract. RITEK "accidently" shipped some of the RICOHJPN-R01-002 certified 4x DVD+R media a month or so ago that was marked as if it were the new RITEK certified 8x DVD+R. Many vendors were selling this stuff at a premium.
I am not sure who to believe. RITEK supposedly admitted their mistake to Meritline in an email from December 17th I believe.
Apparently lots of US vendors got this but perhaps RITEK did not tell them. Perhaps RITEK told them but because some of the new 8X burners would actually attempt to burn this 4x media at 8x they figured let it ride.
I know I can buy this same 4x media cheaper at almost any local store. So the issue to me is bordering on fraud.
