Hi. I'm a bit new to video encoding. I know about all the audio and video codecs, but I don't quite get why there are different container formats. I just want to do simple rips from a DVD to my hard drive using XviD as my video codec and Ogg as my audio codec. Is there any reason that I shouldn't use AVI? What would MKV or OGM give me?

I don't think that the container should make a difference in quality, but they might be smaller or larger and therefore leave less bits for the video.

I just want to make simple 700MB rips of DVDs using 48kbps Ogg Vorbis for audio and XviD for video. Will OGM files be playable on WMP 9 as long as I have the Ogg Vorbis and XviD directshow filters? Would MKV be better?

Tell me what you think about the containers for my purpose and their compatibility.

plz respect rule #1 (inlcuding #1a) and #12

and to make it shorter for you:
if you want vorbis as audio you can forget AVI as container, as it doesnt handle vorbis
