View Full Version : RC1? how about beta 4?

This has been on my mind of the beginning of this release, so i JUST have to say it:
Okay, xvid ROX, it will be the future, i believe 100% in it, BUT
This new Release Candidate if FAR from a release candidate, naming it RC1 is not right, too many bugs and too many new updates.
A rename to Beta 4 would do, unless we are getting 20 RC's this is not right.

I recommend you post a valid bug report, or join the xvid team and help them program, don't start a useless thread like this one...xvid is pretty solid IMO.

Why dont we have a good look at the changelog.
Changelog:
XviD-1.0-RC1-25012004 (Niltze):
- Cleaned up VfW-GUI
- Colour space assignment fixes (dshow)
- Weight zones fixed
- Overhauled VfW status window in general
- Bugfixes in the plugin system
- Statsfile existence gets checked now on 2nd pass
- Postprocessing fix
- Faster first pass QPel gets disabled as well now
- Installer deletes old XviD configuration (no need for "Load defaults" after install)
I would not consider any of those changes to be major, the difference between encoding something with beta3 and rc1 will leave you with the same resulting file (except possibly if you use qpel / zones).
The Encoder Core has Barely changed, if this is not a sign of stability, what is?
The things left to do before a final release are minimal, perhaps a minor fix (if a problem is found) and some more additions to the decoder at the most.
I Have just finished encoding a 25 episode anime series with Xvid1.0 Beta3, and the ONLY problem I had was that I got an undersized file, and having a look at the logs concluded that I was definately maxing out xvid, and no more quality could be gained (which is a good thing, because all the episodes look amazing)
I believe that the Xvid team has made the right decision by Labeling this RC1.
What are these bugs in Xvid1.0 RC1 that your talking about?
Danzel.

encoder is good but decoder is terrible. I hope that version with postprocessing and brightness adjust will be released

@bob0r: How about doing some actual work to help get the "bugs" fixed? I see one (1) bug report, where you didn't even bother to follow up on your reply. Do I need to say more?
@Honza: Until then, you can enable "Raw Video" as input in ffdshow, and do all you postprocessing you like there. IMO levels is often much more useful than Brigtness/Contrast.

Renaming would just cause more confusion. The devs thought it's good enough for release candidate status, so that's how it's called. End of story.
Also, doubt we'll see 20 RC's. :D

Those doubts are justified - Danzel has put it in nice explaining words :)

@sh0dan ffdshow is not compatible wit my favourite player (Media player clasic) (It often freeze) and Nic´s postprocessing was sufficient

Let me guess you're using Win98se? I had similiar problems then i was still using win98se. It didn't matter what decoder i used, mpc sometimes frozed.

Agreed.
And you should add this: the changelog reports things added/modified before XviD was declared RC. To evaluate better, we should see what changes after RC1. The only functionalities missing are brightness & deringing (minor feats I think).
Just look at the release thread: there are a lot of posts about overflow control & quantizer values. This means setup of the codec params, not bugs nor something missing.
IMHO declaring RC status was the right thing to do.

To tell the truth, I read all the messages about bugs, complains, overflow and so on about RC1, and so I didn't used it for a while.
Then I made a test, 1:50 film, res 640*576 16:9, quant 2 - 31, Qpel, MPEG quant, 4 Bframes, VHQ 4, NO packed bitstream and other settings at default.
Encoded in VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.1 2424 build. I know that it should be buggy, but I have NO problems.
Result: perfect and absolutely NO problem with it.
The only matter was using Xvid Direct Show filter for playback, but using FFDshow or 3ivx filter everything is just fine! :D

Some people have jobs, can't be online 24/7.
That's what a forum is for, so you can read it later.
I have read the reactions and i am satisfied, even though i never had an undersize problem before from the last alpha to beta 3, and with rc1 i got quite alot, i msged my "bugs" already and they are MY system's fault, well so be it, i'll wait for xvid 1.0 and then format my system, put windows xp clean on it and pray xvid 1.0 will finally smoke out vcd/svcd forever!!
Good luck and thanks for making it clear

What? You have a, whatwasit, a ... a what? A JOB? Now, this is extraordinary, really!
:)
Sh0dan has a job just like you and me. I even assume he is working as much as you and me together.
Nevertheless, he has developed and coded that unbelievable much for the community, (/me wonders how he manages this ...), we would be far from where we are now without him (regarding AviSynth, in particular).
And just the same applies to the XviD developers! They do all of that incredible work in their free time ... from which all of us have too little, I think.
So stop whining, and get yourself clear about your priorities.
Just stepping in, providing nothing useful, but stating "hey, you guys are doing silly things", for me almost spells like: t-r-o-l-l-i-n-g.
Ah! Gotten the load off
