View Full Version : Weird Stuff Happening

Hey, I was trying to copy an anime DVD of mine. I figured out most of the stuff by myself. I am going to post what I did to make sure I did it well. Then, I will ask my question.
1. DVD Decrypter - Rip VOB, AC3, SUB separately
2. DVD2AVIdg - Convert VOB into AVI
3. AVIMux GUI - Add AC3 to AVI
So, now I have a full working AVI with sound.
My problem occurs when I try to add subtitles. I used SubRip to rip the subtitles from the VOB into SUPs and a SRT. Then, I tried using SubMux (with VobSub) to add the subtitles to the AVI. This actually worked but the problem occurred with SubRip. All my subtitles, the actual text, are the same thing as the filename of the SUPs. What did I do wrong?? My actual text of my subtitles follows this pattern ...
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Death and Rebirth00001.sup
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Death and Rebirth00002.sup
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Death and Rebirth00003.sup
........
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Death and Rebirth00125.sup
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Death and Rebirth00126.sup
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've read the forums extensively and could not find any solution.
Thanks,

The *.sup are the subpictures, normally a srt file contains text subtitles, but some applications use it with subpicture files. To convert to text select the option "Subpictures to text via OCR" in Subrip, see Doom9's guide http://www.doom9.org/subtitle_guide.htm. You can also keep the original subpictures, use VobSub for that (http://www.doom9.org/dvobsub.htm). This is a faster method (you avoid OCR) but the size of the subtitles is much bigger and you can't mux them into AVI.

Ok, I've done that. But another problem arises. The subtitles supposedly rip in 6 seconds. and i say supposedly because I cannot find the file anywhere on my hard drive. I'm ripping off of the DVD. Is that a problem? the reason i am doing that is because i have already ripped the DVD demuxing the audio and the subtitles. For some reason, SubMux doesnt accept .sub files. Anyways, what am i doing wrong?
Thanks,

OK, no one has answered this yet and I have encountered yet another problem. I reripped the subtitles off of the DVD, demuxing them into their own files. There are two files, for some reason, one being 260k while the other being 3.51mB. When I viewed these SUB files, all the test were really weird characters. What am I doing wrong!?!?!

Probably you need to extract the subtitles from an unencrypted dvd. Try to rip the dvd first, or use VSRip (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/), similar to the classic VobSub method but with some improvements.
The .sub files contains the subpicture information (as it is in the dvd) and the .idx the timestamps, languages, etc.

Subrip should be able to rip from idx/sub to .srt as well.

I used DVD Decrypter to demux the SUB files from the DVD. This gets past the encryption of the DVD and there is no IDX file that I am aware of. Anyone willing to take me on a step-by-step journey to get from a DVD to an AVI with subtitles? I know that there is a sticky telling me what to do and I have followed its instructions. Obviously, I messed something up. I have already converted from VOB to AVI and muxed in the AC3 so I do have video and audio. All I need are the subtitles.
Thanks and sorry for so much trouble,

Well, step-by-step with VSRip (I'm ripping the subtitles from a DVD as I'm writting):
1 - Select the *.IFO file of the movie in the DVD, often "VTS_01_0.IFO", and the location where the files will be saved.
2 - Select the PGC of the movie (usually the first) and the languages you want. You probably don't need to change the rest of the options.
3 - Wait until the subs are ripped. Now you should have the .idx and .sub files. Rename them with the same name of the avi file (except the extension), and play the movie. If you have VobSub installed you should see the subtitles.
That's what I do to rip the subtitles.
Optional: If you want to convert them to SRT use SubResync, open the idx file and save it to SRT. Then you have to make Subresync to recognise all the characters, it takes some time. You can also use SubRip for this, if you intend to rip more subtitles it's better since you can save the characters matrix and save time the next times you extract subtitles (see the SubRip guide).
Hope this time you succeed!

Albert gave an excellent walkthrough ... let me repeat the most essential part: don't demux subtitles using dvddecrypter :).

Albert,
I did exactly as you said and it still didnt work. Here is a breakdown of what I did. Remember, I already have an AVI which fully functions visually and audio-ly (heh).
I loaded my IFO into VSRip and saved it, ending up with an IDX file and a SUB file, just as you said. I then loaded the IDX into VobResync, fixed all the characters, and saved it as a SRT file. Lastly, I dragged both the AVI and the SRT into SubMux and saved it. When I opened the new AVI, there was still perfect audio and visual but absolutely no subtitles. What is going on? This process is much too difficult. I have followed instructions perfectly and it still doesnt work. Why?
Thanks,

It seems you ripped the subtitles well (take a look at the SRT with Notepad to be sure). I don't know what can be wrong, maybe when muxing the subtitles or playing the avi. What media player do you use? It can display srt subtitles or it uses DirectVobSub like Classic Media Player?
The program I know as "SubMux" is to mux subs in mpeg, maybe you mean AVIMux. VirtualDubMod can mux subtitles too.
If you don't like all the process, you can use the .sub and .idx files instead of converting them to srt.

I have no clue what's happening. I looked at the SRT file in Notepad and it's really weird. The following are subtitles number 15-25.

That is all that there is. There is no dialogue, only these headings. Why is this all screwed up?
Thanks and sorry for all this confusing stuff,

The srt is ok. If they're not the subtitles you wanted, you might have chosen the wrong language in subresync (or vobsub). In Subresync you only convert one subtitle stream to SRT, repeat the proess for each language. Anyway, you should see these subtitles, so I repeat: what media player do you use? I suggest you try different players.

I am currently using Winamp to play my videos but I have also tried it with Windows Media Player. That didn't work either. When I ripped the subtitles, there were two English SUBS. Was I supposed to add both of them to the AVI?? I just picked the larger one, which I guessed contained the dialogue. What else am I supposed to do?
Thanks,
TC

I'm not sure if Winamp can display srt subtitles inside AVIs, I use Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358) and it works fine. I suppose you have installed DirectVobSub, since it's necessary to display subtitles. If it's installed, an icon should appear on the taskbar when you play an avi with subtitles, click on it to change the settings.

I dont know if I am confusing you but I will try to explain again. If I am confusing you, I am very sorry.
The DVD that I am trying to rip is my own copy of Neon Genesis Evangelion - Death and Rebirth. It is an anime. From the DVD, I ripped the VOBs as "Direct Stream Copy," the AC3 as "Demux," and the subtitles as "Demux." I did this all with DVD Decrypter. The reason that I Demuxed the AC3 and the SUBs is so I could convert the VOB into AVI before adding the sound and the subtitles.
So, after ripping these four files (there are two English SUBs), I took the VOB and used DVD2AVIdg to convert it into AVI (first D2V and then AVI). Then, I used AVIMux GUI to add audio to the AVI by Muxing the AVI and the AC3. So now, both audio and video are perfect.
Now comes the difficult part. I loaded the IFO into VSRip and got an IDX file. This I loaded into VobResync, made sure all the characters were correct, and got a SRT file. Lastly, I used SubMux to combine the AVI and the SRT.
The two problems that I am having is that, for some reason, there are no subtitles for the dialogue, only the headings (see examples 15-25 in earlier post). I ripped only the English subtitles. The second problem is that, even with the headings, they do not appear in the AVI.
Now, that is everything that I have done. I can start from the complete beginning if need be. I just wish I could rip my DVD.
I will try to view the AVI with Classic Media Player as soon as I have the chance. I will keep you posted.
Thanks,
TranquilChant

Well, I downloaded Media Player Classic and saw the subtitles (YAY!!!!!!). But I still need those subtitles that are the dialogue. Why would I only have the subtitles that announce things like "15 years later" or stuff like that??
Thanks so much, at least I can finally see them. It makes me happy, deep down here (pointing to my toes) ... hahaha.
Thanks a lot Albert, only one more problem to crack.

It appears that the one you OCR'd is the one for the translation of signs etc. - try to ocr the other one when you do the subresync step (idx/sub subs can contain multiple subtitle tracks, srt is always one track/language only).

But the other one is much much much smaller.
Thanks, though, I'll try it ASAP and post an update.

Ok, so I tried to start all over from the complete beginning. Everything was going well until DVD2AVIdg. I loaded the vob, saved the file, and wanted to save the avi. but when i get to the step where i have to choose the compression options, if i choose DivX, its done in a millisecond while if i choose mpeg, i get the windows error message saying "bla bla bla program has encountered an error and needs to close." whats going on now? it didnt do this when i did it earlier. why is it doing it now?
thanks,
TC
Oh, and I will post this in the DVD2AVI forum as well.
