Hi all
I have been happily using AutoGK for a while now (version 0.5) utilising XVID codec, all from PAL material, and have done around a dozen projects that all came out looking great.
Today I upgraded to 0.8 (for no reason other than to have it :) ).
Today is also the first time I've tried an NTSC source with AutoGK, irrespective of version.
The process was as smooth as ever but on viewing the results, there is a strange blue edging to anything with motion - ie when one of the characters moves quickly you can see a strange blue effect around them momentarily. It's most disconcerting and once you notice it you can't ignore it.
Does anyone have any theories as to whether it's something to do with it being an NTSC source, or my upgrading to 0.8, or indeed both?
Perhaps I should go back to 0.5 and try the same flick?
JF
PS
I do not use Advanced settings at all except to select AC3.

Hi-
Is it in the source vobs?
You'd better post the log file. But I don't think it has anything to do with it being from an NTSC source.

Thanks for replying.
Viewing the VOBs with PowerDVD, they look fine. My option to attach is not enabled so I can't post the log file - I'm assuming if I cut and pasted it here it would exceed maximum message length?

if you remove long lines of SetCompData() from the log file - it'll be pretty consize...

Hi-
The log looks OK. Nice high resolution, and a nice compression percentage. The movie should look good. Do me a favor please, and try something. Take one of the 2 parts of the movie and open it in VDubMod. Then scroll to one of the places where you saw the blue outline artifacts when playing it back in your software player. Do those same artifacts show up when viewing the same scenes in VDubMod? My hunch is that there's nothing wrong with the rip, but that it's a decoder problem.
If it looks bad when playing it, but fine in VDubMod, then please install Nic's XviD Decoder (http://nic.dnsalias.com/XviD-Dec.exe) and see if it improves the picture.
If nothing changes, then report back and we can try something else. Report back anyway. Good Luck.

Hmmmm.
It does seem as though it plays back better in vdub 1.5.4 (which is the version I have), so I installed the xvid decoder and tried again using real player on the avi files.
Difficult to be certain but I think the effect is still visible, but only on REALLY fast movement now, on edges that are clearly visible, such as a close up of a jawline against a dark background etc. It certainly doesn't seem to be present everywhere something is moving, as it was previously.
Do you think that this is just the xvid encoding and that AutoGK has done its best effort? Why would all my previous projects (from PAL and in version 0.5) never show any trace of this effect - that's the question that's bugging me.
I suppose I could convert it to a VIDEO_TS and burn it, to be sure how it looks on a TV - perhaps I'll do that later today. And I'll try a PAL source using version 0.8 - if it is visible in the results then I know that for some reason version 0.8 is not working properly on my PC.
Cheers

Hi-
Thanks for testing.
Why would all my previous projects (from PAL and in version 0.5) never show any trace of this effect - that's the question that's bugging me.
My guess is that it's just coincidence. This was your first (and so far only?) movie after switching to the newer version, and it just happened to be an NTSC one. However, if I remember correctly, len0x turned on at least one other XviD setting (chroma optimizer?) in the newer version. But I don't know if that's playing a role here.
Here are some other things to try:
1. Test with a different player (http://www.doom9.org/software.htm#players), such as BS Player, Zoom Player, or Media Player Classic. If you give BS Player a try, right click the video, go to Properties, and make sure Nic's Decoder is in use. When open, it'll have a brightness slider and some deblocking and deringing settings available. No offense, but I don't really trust RealPlayer.
2. Try a different movie and see if the same thing happens.
3. Do the same movie using the earlier version of AutoGK and see if the effect repeats itself.
That's a lot of work and time though, and I wouldn't really expect you to do all those things.

Thanks again. I did try playing it in MediaPlayer 9 and the effect was still visible. Not tried the others you mention however.
As I stated, I will try a random R2 PAL from my collection in 0.8 to see if it's this newer version that's the problem.
If it shows up in a PAL encode, it must be something in 0.8, so I'll then try the original NTSC project again in 0.5.
I don't mind doing this - I've got a fast PC so it's no bother! I could always leave it overnight anyway!
Will post some results in a day or so.
Cheers
