View Full Version : Anamorphic Encoding

I used search but I think I must have accidently checked the "advanced answers only" option.

I'm completely new to anamorphic encoding so a few things.

Can someone explain the purpose of anamorphic 'encoding', in simple terms?

I'm thinking that it's only useful when you want the resolution from the DVD with great quality at a low bitrate.

Would anamorphic encoding work on an AVI created using XviD Beta 3 and muxed into OGM? What about MKV?

Would anamorphic encoding allow me to create a movie that, at any resolution I set it to in WMP, would have the correct aspect ratio?

I have a 1.85:1 anamorphic movie that I'm NOT trying to fit on 1 CD. Would I just be better off upsizing it to 888x480 instead of keeping it at 720x480 or trying to encode it as an anamorphic encode?

..and lastly..

How do I encode it as an anamorphic encode?

Asking google with this:
http://www.google.de/search?q=anamorphic+encoding&btnG=Google+Suche&hl=de&ie=ISO-8859-1

the first link appearing is this:

http://hkfanatic.com/widescreen/anamorphic/anamorphic.php

After that read my first post of the selam thread to know what to take care of (...playback...).

And finally read up a bit about SVCD creation, there anamorphic encoding seems to be usual and you get a lot of hints.

Higher resolution.
Price to pay: Higher quantization.
Benefit: Subjectively higher quality if done right.

Low bitrate??
As for keeping the original res: So some people say. I always prefer anamorphic encoding. Matter of taste, I guess. Your eyes are the judge.

Two options. ATM the anamorphic option in XviD only works with mplayer and the NeroDigital DSF (container format doesn't matter). Alternatively also resize in MKV and use ffdshow for decoding, the 'overlay' option checked.

Guess so, if I understood your question correctly.

Anamorphic encoding will save you a lot of space. Also, sharp resizers like LanczsosResize for example will further degrade compressiblity.

Now, you can't tell me you haven't found that information. Try again, please - in the new format containers forum.

Thanks guys :)

I'll mull over it in the morning and see what I can come up with.

[EDIT: the website link is like all others I've found on google, it goes into what anamorphic is and not anamorphic encoding]

PS - Thanks for the e-mail warning. Nice to know peeps want you to spend a year disseminating searches, guides, tech jargon, and a billion other things instead of using those same sources AND the knowledge of your peers in a 1 on 1 format.

Point me to the noob forum! You guys are much too advanced for me.
