View Full Version : does vaf file get updated with each pass?

hello all
been encoding with cce lately and breaking up the passes - eg doing 1st and 2nd pass at night and then setting up a couple more passes to go at another time during the day for example. Im assuming, even though i break it up like this, cce takes advantage of the multiple passes but then i would expect to see the vaf file change size (as i do when encoding multiple passes with divx 5.1).
just paranoid that even though i click "use existing vaf file" when i resume with the subsequent passes its all for nought.
is my paranoia justified?!
thanks, jason

A simple way to test (I'd think) is to copy the vaf file before running another pass and then do a byte for byte compare with the vaf after running another pass or two.
I've read that the vaf file is updated, but I noticed the file date doesn't change. So I'm skeptical too.

I've performed this simple test before and yes, the VAF file gets updated with each pass, although date and size doesn't change.

So one should be able to recover from a crash when encoding a 4gb file that hangsat the 6th pass (assuming a backup of the vaf is made after each pass)
so 6x1 pass encoding equals 1x6 pass encoding?

Another question, when you name the second pass and the video file differently, does it save the encoded pass to the second pass file each time a pass is done?
So like using the video file as a temp file and when its done, delete the second pass file and rename the video file to the second pass one, and start a new pass?
This way one could lose 1 pass at most...
Sounds confusing, but read carefully, you will understand :)

Read manual for CCE:)
"...When Multipass VBR is selected in encoding mode, you can save
the video output into two files alternately. One is for an odd number
of times of encoding (1,3,5,... passes), another is for an even number
of times (2,4,6,...). If you specify different names for two video fles, you can at least keep the encoding result of the previous pass even if a cancellation of encoding before completing happens."

Does the vaf get updated after each pass or during?
And to determine whether the pass is to be saved to an odd or even files, is that according to the vaf file or according to the CCE session? Actually, it will be easy to test that out for myself...
:: Edit - it's per session. If you close CCE after the first pass, then start it again, the second pass does not get saved to the filename in the "second pass" box.
