Hello, first of all let me say that I'm new here, so don't be too harsh on me... ;)

I have a DV file on my hard drive that I captured at a friends house, using Windows Movie Maker 2. Only later did I remember that I wanted to edit this video and output it to MPEG-2, so I would be using Studio 8, which is the software I have, and I quite like it.
But now, Studio 8 won't open the DV file I captured!
I did some searching on this forum, and I found out that some editors don't support type-1 files natively... And to make them work I would have to install another codec, which I did. I downloaded and installed the canopus DV codec.
I then changed the file's header with avic.exe to "cdvc".
After all this, the file still couldn't open in Studio 8... What am I doing wrong/missing?

Thanks for you help! :)

Welcome to the forum :)

What was the fourCC before you changed it to "cdvc"? I'm not sure whether Pinnacle Studio uses the Canopus codec, so you may want to try "dvsd" instead.

If you need to change your DV file from type-1 to type-2 or vice versa, then you should have a look at the "Links" sticky thread, where you'll find free convertors.

The file's header was already "dvsd" before I changed it, and that didn't work in the first place. :(

But wasn't Studio 8 supposed to read the file with the modified header? Or is the conversion really necessary?

The four cc header is not the same thing as type-1 or type-2 file. Studio 8 may not be able to open the type-1 file and it has nothing to do with "cdvc" or "dvsd". You need to convert your file from type-1 to type-2 using one of the tools available in the "Links" section of this forum. I think type-1 or type-2 involves how the audio is stored in the avi stream.

Thanks guys. :)

I can open the DV file in studio 8 now. I converted it with the Type-1 -> Type-2 converter.
