I'm trying to convert a DVD to VCD using DVD2AVI and TMPGenc. The movie widescreen. When I open it in DVD2AVI it has the black bars but its still vertically stretched (the bars should be bigger), and so the picture comes out wrong. I see no settings in DVD2AVI to correct this so I'm just moving on TMPGenc.

In TMPGenc I open the project file made by DVD2AVI. For the source I select 16:9 525-line NTSC. For video arrange method, I select Full Screen (Keep aspect ratio 2), although I've tried all the other ones too. I also unlock the output aspect ratio box and select 16:9. Yet the output is still stretched for some reason and comes out wrong.

Can someone help please?

You have an anamorphic Video, what do you need as Targed? Letterboxed or anamorphic? Your Settings are for anmorphic -> anamorphic Video.
If you are not doing any Resizing, select Center instead of Full Screen.

Whats the difference between widescreen and anamorphic?
Which Center should I select? Theres 3 of them.
Also do you think maybe the problem is coming from DVD2AVI, since it shows the picture wrong as soon as it opens up the VOB files?

Anamorphic Video is verticaly stretched. ;)

Yeah, and one of them is called simply Center - like i wrote.

And no, it's not a problem. DVD2AVI shows you the Video as is - the Source IS verticaly stretched, it is an anamorphic Video.

For DVD, you can it encode this Style, no Problem.

I dont understand. When I play the video in PowerDVD it displays it fine. But when I open it in DVD2AVI you its stretched. What you're saying is that it SHOULD be stretched?? It doesnt look right that way. I want it to come out the same way it plays in the DVD player, not stretched out so that it looks wierd. Sorry I'm a bit confused by all this.

Anamorphic Video is a Trick to get a better Video-Quality for Widescreen-Movies.
If it is encodet the right Way (in 16:9-Mode), your DVD-Player will show you the correkt Aspect Ratio = not stretched.
DVD2AVI just shows you the Picture as is, it does no AR-Correktion, PowerDVD will show it the right Way.

Just do a research on Doom9 (the Board and the Guides) about anamorphic Video. Very interesting stuff. ;)

My favourite solution for this problem is:

I cut the black bars using my avisynth script (using Crop)
Then I do filtering as usual and at the end of my script before converting to RGB24, I add black bars (just enough for my TV so I don't lose any details to the overscan border).
I should note I have a widescreen tv, so the result fills the tv quite well and looks great which is what counts.

Edit: I always check the bars using Virtualdubmod before I do the KVCD encode using Tmpgenc Plus with avisynth.
