View Full Version : What's wrong with this XviD clip?

Others say they can play it back fine. But I get blocking when I play it back no matter what decoder I use. Tried ffdshow, divx 5.1 and xvid decoder on it's own. Also shows the blocks in VirtualDubMod but does not report any errors on a frame scan.
1.56MB clip http://www.oddball.nildram.co.uk/test.avi
EDIT: Just found out it will only playback correctly with Nic's decoder. Why?

Wow - a clip that crashes in vdub - this is bad!
What setings did you use?
Could it be file corruption somehow? Hmmm... Thinking about it - if Nic's decoder can decode it, it's probably not.

I did not encode it. Can't say where it came from either :)

few weeks ago I made a clip that crashes vdubmod when scrolling over some of the keyframes. jumping to following frames directly is no problem though, and playback with xvid or ffdshow is fine.
had no time to check back then, and I totally forgot about it. and now I cant recreate it anymore...
if anybody wants to host that 2mb avi pm me

In this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=66050) I had trouble with decoding a captured stream with a broken frame. Fortunately in this case it was a matter of using a different decoder, so it might have been a matter of Koepi's decoder not expecting broken (DivX) frames, however I don't want to merely speculate upon it...
It might be necessary to search for frames that look broken while you can view it with Nic's decoder, just to make sure that it's going to work everywhere you try it. Speaking of which, have you tried VDM's stream error scanning abilities?

Most off all incredible problems with XviD movies reported in the german Gleitz/doom9 forum came from files distorted by filesharing tools...
But I won't put a finger on someone here. :p - Another possible reason for blocks was, if a file was encoded with one specific old version of the XviD codec from Koepi which had a buggy QPel code; ffdshow shall be able to circumvent that by setting "workarounds" to "automatic". But I wonder why movies encoded with that buggy codec version are so wide-spread - I guess it must be included in some kind of evil and system-destroying software called "codec pack"!

That's not like you Koepi to give a non-technical answer. The entire movie plays back perfectly with Nic's decoder. ffdshow and other decoders play it back with blocking. I can't see how the movie is corrupt if it plays back fine with Nic's decoder.
There must be more to it than that.

Well - since no-one knows how it has been encoded, or if it has been corrupted during transfer, it doesn't really matter.

Seeing as it's disney and seeing that you didn't encode it. I think ill be closing this thread.
