Hello,

I'm trying out AutoGK for the first time and would just like to know about how many passes are done when the maximum quality setting for the file size is chosen. Is it a one pass or two pass? And this is probably going to be a really silly question but, If the maximum quality setting does a one pass encode wouldn't choosing a really big file size under the custom file size settings which does a two pass encode be better than a one pass maximum quality setting?
Sorry if that is a rubbish question.

Thanks for your responses.
Ben

Maximum quality uses just one pass and suggest that quality cannot be any better. It is true that two pass encoding with large size (which will exceed the actual max size) will give you the same quality (not better though), but you will waste twice as much time comparing to one pass mode.

Thanks for that.
So seeing as file size does not matter and quality is really the most important thing for me I should always go for the one pass quality encoding. Can I do a quality encode using GKnot then, or would I have to directly use Vdubmod?

Thanks,
Ben.

Hello again,

I've been looking into doing a 1-pass quality based encode with Gknot now. I think that I've almost worked it out but have a couple of questions. This is how I think it should be done:

1. Go to the options tab and choose 1-pass quality based in the Divx properties.
2. Set the quantizer to 1. (the lower the number the better quality avi.)

But now I dont know what to do with the Nth pass settings because as far as I understand they wont be used anyway as it is a 1 pass encode. Therefore I guess it makes no difference what it has here.

I am also unsure what to put in the bitrate tab to specify the size of the file or the required bitrate. I thought the one pass quality based encode determines the best bitrate and therefore the file size for you. So what do I put in here or does it make no difference?

Once I have saved the avs file and am almost ready to encode I have the option to choose either the Multi passes, First pass, Nth pass radio buttons. I have always left it checked on the Nth pass radio button as I have always done two pass encodes in the past. What should I choose here?

Finally when you choose the Divx5 tab you can bring up the Divx5 codec settings again, which should have been configured already in the previous section and there is a drop down box to choose the number of passes. It ranges from 2 to 6, however if I am doing a one pass quality encode what should I put in here?

I've had a look at some guides and these are the pieces of information that I have not been able to find out. Many thanks again for your help.

Ben.

1 pass mode is not possible with GK atm...
