View Full Version : Encoding Family Guy DVDs

I want to backup my Family Guy DVDs using Gordion Knot.
I usually for a movie, lot the DVD2AVI work file, then choose the AC3 soundtrack, and then use "autocrop". Then I use the slider until the bar turns from yellow to grey.
In this case I can't seem to make it look good without artifacting.
What resolution, size and other factors do you recommend? I was making each episode 150 MBYTES.

I encoded Futurama at 100 mb an ep in xvid using gknot and all was peachy try using some noise filters and see if that helps (although i never needed any) there are some in GKnot built in select light denoising i think
what quality of sound are u using use 128k it should be fine 150 for 1/2 ep should be no prob at 640 X 480
i did most of mine at 512X384 to increase the compressibility but some i did in 640X480 and they both looked good
Hope this helps

Well, it depends which season you want to encode. I noticed that seasons 1 & 2 have a lot more noise than newer seasons (season 3). So you're really gonna need some filters and more bitrate for those old seasons.
I encoded some episodes from season 3 at 512*384 with bilinear resize and 64kbps ogg audio with a 116MB filesize. It looked good... just not that sharp.

well... i kinda hate to mess the flow of the thread... i'm a huge xvid fan... but i found that realvideo9 works beautifully with family guy.... much better than xvid.... try that and see what you get

I am very pleased with the xvids I ripped from my Season 3 PAL DVDs. They're 175mb each and has a 512x368 resolution. Colors and lines are crisp. I ripped with GKnot, and I'm not quite sure I remember correctly here, but I think the source were progressive, which surprised me. At least it wasn't blended (*shrug*)..

God I wish the US had PAL DVD's. These NTSC Family Guy DVD's are a real pain in the butt. I've been trying forever to perfect them without jerky motion with no success. I've tried using both codecs with and without IVTC in GK and Auto GK, none of which can get rid of the jerky motion during panning sequences. There has to be a way!! Does anyone know anything that will help me and the others trying to make good quality encodes of the Family Guy DVD's?

I don't know about TFG DVDs specifically, but I expect that they contain 30fps interlaced source. In that case it's deinterlacing you want, not IVTC.

its just interlaced.... so just fielddeinterlace() .... you can try to decimate it from there.... but it may be jerky... i usually don't notice it usually... but some people do...
