View Full Version : Banged away at Big 3 for past 2 days-problems cured by new IfoUpdate & other musings!

Maybe the third time's the charm?

First tried Big 3 a few months back. Result was too big and I couldn't read the files into DVD Shrink ("Programming error - impossible program state occurred") for post-processing.

Tried it again a month ago, but that was a title with shared VOBIds, so that probably wasn't a good idea in the first place. I'll have to take a look at that Finding Nemo guide that Eyes `Only just put out... ;)

Tried it again a couple of days ago on a relatively simple title (multi-PGC, but no sharing of VOBIds). Here's how that went...

First, check out these movie attributes:

Title Set (Movie) attributes:
Video: MPEG-2 720x480 (NTSC) (NTSC 525/60) (16:9) (letterboxed)
Audio 1: English (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x80)
Audio 2: Français (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x81,0x80)
Audio 3: (Dolby AC-3) 2ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x82)
SubPicture 1: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20,0x21)
SubPicture 2: Français (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x22,0x23,0x20)

In DIF4U, I deselected the French Audio Stream, but left all of the Subtitle Streams checked.

The end result played, but was too big, and I ended up with 4 subtitle tracks instead of the original 2. I did a search here in the forums and saw some related inquiries relating to this but not much in terms of resolution. They were here:

ReAuthorist & Subtitles (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67567)
Subtitle question (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58730)

Can someone explain the subtitle assignments above? It appears that the title only has two actual subtitle tracks, but have multiple assignments?

So, I went back and redid the DIF4U step, deselecting subtitle streams 0x21, 0x22, and 0x23, leaving only 0x20. I didn't care about the French subtitles, btw.

Built the DVD and all came in at a good size. However, I could not bring the files into either DVD Shrink or InstantCopy and that bothered me.

As of late, I've been able to get past these DVD Shrink programming errors (I get 'em with InstantCopy output every once in a while too) with some work in IfoEdit. True here, too, just went in and did a Strip Streams and let IfoEdit rewrite the .IFO files and I could then read the content into DVD Shrink.

I figured it had something to do with what IfoUpdate does and does not transfer over from the Scenarist files. Did a lot of comparing of IFO files using that cheezy tool that I wrote (here (http://www.mrbass.org/dvdauthor/)). On a side note, here's a decent tool for doing 3-way comparisons: link (http://kdiff3.sourceforge.net); for 2-way I use Beyond Compare (link (http://www.scootersoftware.com)).

Anyway, I figured I'd take a look and see if there were any new IfoUpdate revs out (I was using v0.72) and lo and behold there is. Up to v0.77 as of 01/04/04 (check out the Doom 9 download page).

Using IfoUpdate v0.77 and these options:

Transfer VTS_C_ADT Table
Copy Color Table in Each PGC
VTS_TMAPTI Table Transfer (Time Map)
Adjust VTS_TMAPTI and ADMAP Sizes

I get:

output that's directly readable by DVD Shrink
proper advancing of content using PowerDVD time bar (you don't get kicked out to the menu)

Update: I did have to do IfoEdit Get VTS sectors after IfoUpdate to get this to go thru DVD Shrink, but that was it (and changes were made by IfoEdit even after doing the "Correct VTS Sectors" function in IfoUpdate).

The resultant IFO files actually look a lot like what I was getting when I was using Strip Streams in IfoEdit before to make the content readable in DVD Shrink.

Reading the changelog for IfoUpdate, it looks like Eyes `Only has been doing a little QC with jdobbs, so kudos to both you guys! I couldn't get the Time Map to transfer with the old version because the tables differed in size, so good work!

Looks like an update to the guide might be in order... :)

Did a lot of comparing of IFO files using that cheezy tool that I wrote for the record i definitely do not think it is 'cheesy'. it has saved me a lot of effort when dealing whith complex titles and for that, thanks! :D

and for your information
Up to v0.77 as of 01/04/04 (check out the Doom 9 download page).
jdobbs released v0.78, avaliable here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58897&perpage=20&pagenumber=2) which has the changelog:
Got a bugfix release...

January 4th, 2004 (v0.78)

- Bugfix. When the length of the INI changed as a result of actions enabled in v0.75 -- the Last_Sector_of_VTSI was not changed in the INI. Fixed.
and btw
congrats on your first successfull backup with the big3!

Didn't see that new ver - cool.

Almost got this one - burnt the image and tested it, but no subtitles on my standalone. But they show up in PowerDVD???

just a thought ...
but if your english subs are
SubPicture 1: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20,0x21) which i assume would be
0x20 = widescreen
0x21 = letterboxed
and you only selected 0x20 and didnt adjust scenarist subpicture stream to be both 'W' and 'L', then the subs wouldnt be played on you tv if you are viewing in letterbox mode ....try adjusting the viewing mode on the dvd and see if they show up.

....of course i could be way off base ...

You're on to something here. I am watching the DVD in letterbox mode. I set the TV (it's 4:3) to 16:9 in the DVD's setup menu and now the subtitles appear.

I also looked at the IFO files that Scenarist generated when it built the DVD, and it specs only 0x20 for the Subpicture stream.

But I checked the Scenarist project settings in the Track Editor and both the W and L buttons are depressed for the stream.

Something's amiss here...

....another guess...
go into the scenario editor window, select the pgcs of the vts thats giving you grief, and in the property browser, check the subpic attributes folder and make sure that one 'attribute' is set to 'English' W and one to 'English' L, sorry hard to explain...
from another thread
"When done press the 'Scenario Editor' tab and find VTS*_Title* and press the grey box under it that has PGC written on it (and VTS_*_PGC_*pgc written under it). Now you should have some info in the 'Property Browser' (lower middle "window" of Scenarist). Doubleclick 'Subpicture Attribute'. Doubleclick all of the 'PGC Sub-Picture Attr #' and make sure they look the same as they are for PGC*."
or in this case, make sure they all specify 'W' and 'L'
if they all look right then .....no idea, sorry

Yeah, I checked those attributes again and they're both checked. That area in Scenario Editor that you reference above reflects the settings that are made in Track Editor for Subpicture attributes. Track editor had W and L depressed, thus Scenario Editor specified "(Wide & Letter)".

Actually, I couldn't undepress just one of either W or L in Track Editor without getting an error when building the project.

I tried something else. I copied the subpicture and audio tables when doing the IfoUpdate step, and the subtitles work, but that screws other things up. So, I dumped the IFO files to compare them, but I'm not seeing anything obvious.

I can't figure this out...
