Obviously I am very new here. I read a lot of the posts b4 joining and even more since. I have tried a number of programs offered at no charge by the members of this board. Most of them do not function well if at all. I do not blame all of the programs as I am sure I made mistakes in setup, etc.
I started using the underling programs, DVD decrypter, vstrip, rejig, BeSweet (and Danni Dins GUI for BeSweet), dvd2avi, bbmpeg, and even tmpgenc :P. I achieved results that turned out very good (IMHO) but time consuming. I will add here I do not have large flat screen/thx sound system in my basement, Just a nice quality 27" Panasonic TV w/an $800(total) home theatre-nothing fancy.
In reading even more I found out that Doom9 uses gk. I said to myself I have to use what this hard headed European uses (German or Russian by chance? Comments in codec shootout FAQ, hilarious stuff!)
Anyway, after a few tweaks here and there-without reading a guide-I had complete success with gk. Quality/file sizes were right on target and exceeded my spectations and previous results, and that's all anyone can ask for when backing up a DVD.
Thanks lenox for a great tool.
Programs that I failed at sorting out:
DVX
Usually crashed then wants to uninstall/reinstall itself
It flagged Nic's xvid stable binary codec! (my word!)
DoitfastforU
Limits on processing of .vob already on HD.
Why? Making new .vobs/.m2v's anyway right.
Made one large vob and then a small second vob just the last 10 mins of movie.
Annoying sounds.
Outright begging 4 dough....nuf said.
DVD2SVCD
Procoder issues I couldn’t sort out. I made some progress but bbmpeg and procoder don't seem to like each other.
Rejig.
I successfully demuxed nice, fixed ac3 files and I liked the single large m2v to work with but it was semi pooched-encoders didn’t like it but ok in vdub. But then I found the vob plug-in for besweet and .lst file function so I don't use it for that anymore. Although I will try out the authoring functions in the future-I believe overall that this is a very powerful tool.
Danny Dins GUI for mpg2avi, vstrip, etc.
Probably functional but the colours over powered me and some of the boxes are chopped off and cannot read what’s in them.
And the cursor at the website?
AutoGK
Crashed at the approx. same place twice on same source as gk, which worked.
DVD used:
Freaky Friday-excellent movie!
So thanks again for a great website and a great tool.
