View Full Version : Direct Show skipping/random FF ?

I recently reinstalled Windows (as I do periodically) and have noticed a strange problem with media playback. Periodically, almost all my files will fast-forward for less than a second, then resume playback at the normal rate. This occurs in Zoomplayer and Windows Media Player, so I have to assume that the issue is somewhere in Direct Show itself. It occurs both with video files and with mp3s, so I can't believe that it's just an encoding problem (the particular video files I'm using use AC3 audio).
I'm using ffdshow to decode the AVIs. Any suggestions as to the cause, and any ideas for possible solutions?

I have same problem -- here is what I have learned with two computers. Random FF is in all progams: Zplayer, MPC, Media Player9, even WinDVD playing DVDs from DVD drive (dma). I have found numerous references to the problem, but no definitive solution.
Solved:
Computer #1 -- P4 1.7 512 megs, DX9, WinXP, SBLive SPDIF output to external amp, Zplayer, MPC, Radeon 8500, WinDVD Platinum 5, all latest drivers. Use mpgaudio.ax, iviaudio.ax, directsound in Zplayer. Random FF problem. Tried AC3filter and all possible AC3 decoder combinations. No success. Found thread on similar problem referencing SBLive drivers. Reverted to old Win98 drivers that came with card, updated with XP patch. No Success. Discovered devldr32.exe in C:\windows\system32 was later version than old drivers. Replaced with 1.0.0.17 version. PROBLEM SOLVED!
Unsolved:
Computer #2 -- P4 2.8 1 gig, Intel D865PERLL with onboard audio, DX9, Radeon 9800 pro, WinXP, WinDVD Platinum 5, Zplayer, mpgaudio.ax, iviaudio.ax, directsound in Zplayer -- New computer, new install, no other programs. SAME PROBLEM!
I suspect issue is with DX9 or WinDVD Platinum. Any help anyone could give would be very appreciated!

Try using different AC3 decoder filter.
I'm using ffdshow to decode the AVIs.
Perhaps ffdshow is causing this. Again, you should try some alternatives (latest DivX 5 decoder, XviD 1.0)

I have tried ffdshow, ac3filter, vs. Windvd filters vs. alternative ac3 transport filters. Even tried reclock, but kept crashing zplayer. I believe the problem is outside of decoders/filters. Even WinDVD exhibits same problem with commercial DVD movies.
The common factor is ac3 audio.
