View Full Version : Problem in DV capture via Firewire

My colleague has an NTSC DV tape and wants to convert to DVD/VCD. However, I only got a PAL DV Camcorder and when I put in the NTSC DV tape, it can be played back on the LCD screen on the camcorder but when I use the firewire to transfer it to PC (using Ulead VideoStudio or Microsoft Movie Maker), the screen gets scrambled thus I cannot get a file in PC properly for further editing.
Is there any workaround for my problem?

The obvious workaround would be to borrow his camera

Firewire is just a way to tranfer your data into the PC. If the cam can play it then you can transfer it via firewire. Are you using the right settings when capturing? I've never try something like this ( i live in a PAL area) but just try to set up to capture NTSC footage, and then try PAL settings and see what happens. Anyway, try DVIO (search on google), a simple capture firewire program that doesn't even need to specify frame-rate.
Hope it helps. Regards.

The DVIO link is in the "Links" sticky thread by the way (seems like nobody reads the stickies).

I have tried the DVIO program but it does not work. For PAL tape it works fine, but for the NTSC tape, the program just stops when cap:1. However, the playback on the DV camcorder continues.

If you can't capture it via firewire (did you try adobe premiere?), you can still try a analog capture to a DV codec. If you don't have that possibility, you can try this:
- Get Media Player Classic (if you haven't already).
- Plug you cam via firewire into your PC as usual.
- OPen Media PLayer Classic, File>Open device> then choose your DV cam.
- Now you can choose to what codec do you want to capture (audio and video). For video choose the MS codec (or whatever you have installed). You can't capture audio this way.
- For audio, just open any capture program (like adobe) and capture only audio.
- If it doesn't work you can plug your Phone-out (cam) to your line-in (on your PC). You lose some quality, but hey! nothing is perfect! :)
Hope it helps. If it doesn't work, then i really don't know how to help you.
