Hello, DV codec produces an interlaced output. For a DVD the source is interlaced but frame-based (as 99% of DVDs), ie 2 fields form a nice progressive frame. (Whereas TV broadcast is pure interlaced and field based : 2 consecutive fields render a "combed like" frame).

My question : do you know any DV codecs that outputs a frame based progessive output ? (interlaced). I know the mainconcept but it makes interlaced field based.

My problem is that when I play back a DV content converted into MPEG-2, I get some "combed" pictures. Looking really like interlaced when the picture is moving.

Many thanks.

If you get interlace artefacts, I assume that your DV source is interlaced. If it were progressive, then you don't get any interlacing problems, no matter which DV codec you use.

Your MPEG-2 file may have been encoded either in progressive or in interlaced mode.

If you encoded in progressive mode, then an interlaced DV source has to be deinterlaced (not recommended, at least not for DVD targets). The deinterlacer may have left some interlacing artefacts in the video.

If you encodec in interlaced mode, then you have to take care of the field order. If set correctly, you'll get a proper display on an interlaced display like a TV set. On a progressive display (e.g. a computer monitor) it depends on the playback software. Tools like PowerDVD or WinDVD deinterlace on the fly, thus you don't see combing. If played back without on-the-fly deinterlacing, you'll see the typical combing whereever there's (especially horizontal) movement.
