Not sure where to post this question but this seems to be the best place.

I just found out my TV supports 1080i, 480p - progressive scan from my DVD player giving it a HDTV quality picture.

After hooking it all up, I freakin flipped out. I mean crystal clear.

BUT.....

The greens are to green, the reds are RED, and blues are REALLY blue. Darks are too dark, whites are blinding. It is nearly impossible to watch because it just far to much to look at. It's hard to process the contrast and clarity after watching 480i for a year.

It sucks because you can't turn down the contrast or brightness, makes it to dark. When you go from a night scene to a day scene, you better have your welding goggles ready..

Is this normal? I literally have to struggle to see faces in darker scenes, and squint when brighter scenes come on.

Also, would it be a good idea to try buying a DVD player that supports 1080i, and try that?

Thanks for any advice..

there are no 1080i dvd players, since all dvds are 480 vertical lines max (or 576 or someshit in PAL countries).

There are some DVD players that upconvert to 1080i, I believe. Check out avsforum, those guys know all this stuff.

Hi-

there are no 1080i dvd players

Sure there are. I have one. As lazynoob says, they upconvert. Mine will output 720p or 1080i, and I use the 720p. Although you can't create additional resolution when the source is a 480p DVD, 720p over a DVI cable to a 1280x720 display does result in a significantly better picture, when compared to 480p over component. It's almost 3D the way it jumps out at you.

But I don't have the problems you have,SCteck. Maybe you need a professional calibration of the set.

..sounds like you guys have good tv-sets. if they happen to have a vga-input you surely should check it out, too.

i bought a vga-module for my tv one wise day and feed it using mplayer sonce then. very nice about this is that i can watch practically every format, not only dvds. the quality is awesome, actually to good for bad sources..
