I'm having a weird problem with my 811S. Reading CDs and DVDs is no problem, but when I try to burn a disc, my PC freezes somewhere in the process on every 2nd attempt. I started removing any virtual disc drives, AnyDVD, even set the drive back to RPC-2 status but to no avail.

Basically what happens is I start burning, and at some point the drive LED turns orange, and the PC freezes without warning. I thought maybe Nero fucks up again so I started making ISO images and burning them in DVD Decrypter and just when I thought things were finally working again, I also started getting freezes. Sometimes, even reading DVD-Rs that I previously burned leads to freezing (with the same symptom.. LED is steady orange).

I use the latest drive firmware (HS0J I believe) but this has happened with the HS0E as well, and both Nero 6.0x and Nero 6.3.x. My dad got me thinking it might be a heat problem since the drive is in a Shuttle barebone, but I'm not sold to that idea yet.. the system temp is normal and the system is rock stable (7 days of 24/7 encoding should speak for itself), no crashes, no freezes, no anything except for when I'm burning .
Is the 811S very heat sensitive? If so I suspect someone else must've made the same experience.

I've got the same drive, and have not experienced any freezes, cables ok? amd (via shit installed? me not) or intel board (acceleration driver installed?). However writing - (minus) disks seems nearly impossible, and even + fucks up sometimes, german CT is also not very fond of this drive (not my fault, i wanted a plextor for xmas, was too expensive for my father :-) )

I have a Liteon 811s.......no probs at all...except won't write to Mirror.
I also have a NEC 2500a.......no problems at all. No better than the Liteon.

maybe your liteon is broken....have you tried it in another PC??

actually.. I've figured it out a few weeks ago. It's not the burner.. it's the PC/Windows. I put my old burner back in with which I never had any problems.. and after 3 freezes I gave up burning for the moment. When I have nothing better to do I'll reinstall and see.

I've run into the same problem with a new 811S I just received. Doom9, do you now have any more information on what causes the problem for you?

well.. I've gone to such radical measures as to delete the IDE controler in the control panel and putting the old burner back in but with no joy. For some time I thought burning images would work but eventually even that turned out to not be true. Yesterday I reinstalled Windows (this is a really old installation, almost 1 year), then burned 5 SVCDs (cue/bin) in a row with success. Then I switched to DVD-R, upon which I got 2 new freezes. Then I started making ISO images with Nero and burn them using DVD Decrypter. That way I have no burned more than a dozen DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs (my HD was really full since I couldn't burn anymore since I got the new burner). I've also just burned 3 CD-Rs the normal way (no images, directly from Nero). Unfortunately I can't quite pinpoint the problem.. could be Nero 6.3x, I made to upgrade to that version around the time, could be the replacement barebone. At least now I can burn even though it's not as painless as it used to be.

I just put DvDXcopy on my pc
and it started doing the same thing...I suspect the paffin-c???
drivers of completely screwing up my system....can't delete em...
They only interact with DVD not cd so that would explain why cdr still works....insert a blank Dvdr and everything freezes.
Just deleted windoze and reinstalled from scratch.
Everything works again now..
