View Full Version : Any good open-source DVD Players in existence?

I'm an nVidia user and this company doesn't offer a free hardware (hardware support for the gfx chip!) player to its customers.
NVDVD costs money, and it's not worth it. I tried the trial version and it froze when a DVD was inserted. *lmao* So I had to de-install it quickly. The detonator media center or something like that isn't finished yet, and will cost money, too, maybe.
So I'm looking for a really free-source alternative. I know that the GNU/Linux community can be lucky to have some very good DVD players, but as a Windows user, I only know of semi-commercial players like WinDVD, PowerDVD or Zoomplayer. I don't believe in shareware or anything similar, so I'm asking anybody if you knwo of a useable player besides mpc (which DVD playback features aren't that nice really, tho it works).

Sorry, I have to correct myself mpc doesn't work with all my DVDs... =( gives me heavily corrupted video images on some .vobs!

Lucky me!
After searching almost 4 hours for a DVD player program, I discovered that I still had a registered WinDVD 4 copy (from 1999! :D) that came with my DVD drive.
So finally I can watch this movie listening to the audio track I like. (damn you MPC!!! (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=421764#post421764))
But of course, it would be nice to still post useable players here...

Thanks a lot, I will surely give it a try.
Not only because there are still some backed up vob movies on my linux server at home, ;) but also because VLC looks like a fine player to me.
edit: Ok, I installed VLC and... it's awesome, exactly what I needed! Double thanks! :D

Think you missed something.. the reason mpc was able to play a dvd at all was cause you had windvd installed.. it was using windvd's filters, so you should really say damn windvd instead. Same goes for zoomplayer.
Hmm.. when i think about it, perhaps mpc has some of the neccesary filters built in but i don't think it has all.
Ps.
WinDVD doesn't use the same filters for it's playback, only provides it for other players
edit - just checked. As of the latest mpc, it supports everything needed for dvd playback.

Haha, WinDVD wasn't and has never been installed before on my computer when I first tested mpc's DVD playback. ;)

I know, just look at my first post in this thread.
Hihi, never mind. Bye.
P.S.: I found another DVD software in my CD-ROM box: WinFastDVD. Also protected with a S/N, it came with my gfx board which was built in 2003. So, now I got 4 nice DVD software players (what a waste of disk space): mpc (not really a waste at all), vlc (great too), WinDVD4 (old!) and WinFastDVD (maybe I'll use it when the other three won't playback a certain disc). :P
@gabest: :P improve the mpeg playback!!! WMP9's is still superior :scared:

I don't think that's quite the way to endear him to your plight...

Really not a nice kind for asking for improvements.
Read forum rule2 !
gabest is only one person and he is not microsoft (and has no developement team behind)!
MPC is freeware, not WinDVD or any other player which costs some money
And if you consider this fact, his player and all his filters are a great work and you'll see that MPC is better than WMP in many directions.
Btw. what kind of mpeg do you mean? MPEG 1, 2, 3 or 4 ?

Since he talks about DVD I suppose is MPEG-2 (MPEG-3 exists?). But I think that any problem it can have should be solved by the people behind the decompressor library gabest used to make the filter (was http://libmpeg2.sourceforge.net ?), not by gabest itself.
I have not tried a lot of DVDs, but:
- you can use Cyberlink or Intervideo filters por mpeg-2 in MPC (and I don't know, but probably VLC uses the same libmpeg2)
- DVD Navigator perhaps is the only thing that can't be changed? (I think is from Microsoft, but you can ask gabest for the option to use the DVD Navigator from other players if this can't be done now)

MPEG3 is MP3... I can suppose, of course but "MPEG" alone is not really very detailed. ;)
Concerning MPEG2:
I like the idea that gabest uses a mpeg2 decoder for free.
Most other solutions are based on third party filters like WinDVD/PowerDVD/Elcard Decoder filters which costs money.

I generally use ZoomplayerPro for DVD playback. In Zoomplayer you can choose between the DVD Navigators(Microsoft/WinDVD/PowerDVD)...but the Miccrosoft one is the most stable for me atm.

Thought MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3... ;)

You're right...I thought that MP3 is also known as MPEG3, but that's not right.
I googled :D... MPEG3 was aimed for HDTV and is now implemented in MPEG2.

MPEG-2 is not and cannot be free. Everyone has to pay royalties (well, except you make the software educational purposes only - however, even then it's very risky to distribute binaries - just look at LAME)
If MPEGLA would care more they would shut it all down. The law is on their side.

Yeah, sure. But most of SF's mirrors are in US, then there is one in Japan, Australia, Ireland and Czech. rep. Well, if SF does not care ...
